Gracie and her parents found freedom through the Underground Railroad when she was 4. Now 18 she is heading west to get married to support her family. Logan, an ex-confederate soldier is also heading west.
This short story tackles serious subject matter. I wasn't sure how an ex confederate soldier (and former slave owner) would work as a hero. There is a discussion (as much as you can have in a novella) and this is addressed. I really liked Gracie, she stood up for herself. Would like like more at the end, it felt rushed.

I really enjoyed this romantic intrigue. Bought this at a used book sale and I voluntarily chose to review it. This is not for the under 18 readers, I've given it a 5* rating. There is a lot of non stop action in this to keep you turning the pages. There were a couple surprises along the way that I didn't see coming. I also liked the ending.

Wer kennt das nicht, die Eltern zwingen das Kind irgendwas zu machen, sei es ein Umzug in eine andere Stadt oder mehr aus seinem Leben? Mit der Protagonistin Lotte kann sich wohl jeder Teenager identifizieren.

Das farbenfrohe Cover aber auch die locker leichte Geschichte über das erste Verlieben, ist meiner Meinung nach das perfekte Buch für den Frühling. Die 14 jährige Lotta musste mit ihren Eltern nach Berlin Kreuzberg umziehen. Viel lieber wäre sie in ihrem kleinen Dorf in Hessen geblieben. Doch als sie sich in den attraktiven Jungen verliebt, der immer Montags im Kiosk sauere grüne Gurken kauft, verliebt sie sich auch immer mehr in die Hauptstadt.

Der Schreibstill ist sehr an die Sprache der Jugendlichen angelehnt und enthält auch manchmal Fäkalbegriffe. Besonders gut hat mir gefallen, dass Lotte anstatt Tagebuch zu schreiben, Diagramme zu ihrem Leben erstellt, die den Text sehr auflockern. Außerdem besticht der Inhalt durch ganz viel Humor und Selbstironie.

Der einzige Kritikpunkt ist der Schluss des Buches, denn es wird nicht aufgeklärt wie nun das Verhältnis zwischen Lotte und ihren Eltern ist und ob Lottes Vater noch immer so versessen ist ihre Hochbegabung zu beweisen.

Grüne Gurken ist meiner Meinung nach ein sehr gutes Buch für junge Mädels und Jungs, die gerade frisch verliebt sind oder sich gerade von ihren Eltern nicht so gut verstanden fühlen. Aber auch für Erwachsene, die vielleicht schon vergessen haben wie es ist zum ersten Mal verliebt zu sein.

I wanted to love this, but in the end it was a mixed bag for me. I really enjoyed the representation and the characters. The relationships felt authentic, and I was invested in the bonds formed over the course of the book. However, I didn't particularly care for the ending (that's probably a taste thing), and this novella suffered from the common problem many novellas have: it felt like the beginning of a longer story rather than a full and complete story of its own. I would happily read more from this author, but this particular offering felt like it wasn't quite finished.
