Monday Mini – Watch The Shadows by Robin Winter @winterobin13
Watch The Shadows - Robin Winter

I won this beautiful first edition paperback from Robin Winter and Christy Mauer. Thanks so much for the wonderful giveaway.

Watch the Shadows

Amazon  US  /  Amazon UK  /  Amazon CA  /  Goodreads

Nicole is not your typical teenage girl. She is more interested in science than boys, and she has some very unique parents. They are both professors. She mom sounds like a hippie and her dad is working for NASA…strange bedfellows. Meg, their neighbor helped out with the homeless population. Brian, the postman knows them all.

The mystery surrounding the people of Isla Vista, California, kept me reading. I couldn’t help but wonder what the heck is going on. I felt the characters seemed almost real.

It’s funny…I was watching a Halloween NCIS episode on TV, when I read this Halloween story. If you’re a fan of B movies, you are going to want to read Watch The Shadows by Robin Winter. You may be looking out of the corner of your eye, or over your shoulder, wincing at the whispering sound of IT.

The great writing made even the homeless lovable and real, the peripheral characters becoming just as important as the main ones. It didn’t knock my socks off, but I do think it’s worth the read…And, who knows, you may like it more than I.

Watch The Shadows by Robin Winter
Watch The Shadows - Robin Winter
For the first ninety-something pages, I was utterly and completely bored. I even actually contemplated DNF'ing the book. Then it picked up and started to get good, for most of the last half, anyway. I was excited reading about these alien things going around killing people and animals. It was intriguing to learn about them and wait for them to strike again. It was a totally new way of portraying alien species in stories, and I appreciated the ingenuity.
I hated, yes, hated, the very end. Literally, it was the last two pages. Not how I wanted it to end off the story at all. It went back to total boredom, so quick. Out of 174 pages, only about 70 of them were any good.

Watch the Shadows
Watch The Shadows - Robin Winter

Watching the Shadows starts out simply as a man named Winsome, finds a dismembered leg along the side of the highway. Brian the postman sees a shadow that moves, Meg Shrands cat is missing and teenager Nicole also sees things move in her peripheral vision. What starts out as a pretty tame story, ends up packing a wallop. The homeless people of the town are disappearing and there is an overabundance of plastic bags floating around.

Without giving away too much, I will say that this book reminded me of the old movie, The Blob...very creepy things are going on in this little town, a handful of people must try to save the town from a predator that is wrecking havoc on it's residents. I always love to read a good horror story and this one was pretty good. It started out a bit slow for me but I think think it was the setting up of the story line and characters by the author. By the middle of the book I was hooked.

The ending had me thinking a bit, on how much we as inhabitants of this planet are polluting it. With that said I think that this is a book that has all the right elements for the sci fi genre. I don't generally care to read this genre but I found this book to be very well written and from what I got out of the story is that the author intended for there to be a lesson learned. Give this book a try, I don't think you will be disappointed.

Watch The Shadows
Watch The Shadows - Robin Winter

Something strange is happening in the suburban town of Isla Vista. No one can quite figure out what is happening though. Nicole, a high school student who loves science, observes the meteor shower and then notices less small animals in the neighborhood. Brian, the postman, feels like he is being watched and senses shadows along his mail route. Meg, who works with the homeless through her church, finds her tabby cat after its tail has gone missing, and is getting many reports of homeless people who have disappeared. Nicole wants to find out what is going on for her science fair project, but will anyone believe the high school student?

Different and very interesting, Watch the Shadows took me down an unusual path for a thriller. With many changing points of view from Nicole, Meg, Brian and some of the homeless, there is a slow buildup of suspense as to what is happening and how it is affecting people. An ominous tone is created when I didn’t know if the small things happening could be the result of natural events or supernatural. I didn’t really connect to any of the characters personally, but they did all feel like they could be neighbors of mine. I did really like the inventive solution at the end, it was realistic but a little funny. Overall, a slow-building and creepy, thriller for someone who is looking for something different.

This book was received for free in return for an honest review.
