REVIEW:

I'm a bit uncertain on how to rate, or even review, this book.  On the one hand, the explanations of physics, quantum mechanics, general relativity, astrophysics, cosmology, gravity, etc are pretty good and, most importantly, understandable without requiring a physics degree.*  On the other hand, the imaginary adventurous travels (i.e. thought experiments) to such things as the inside of atoms and the cosmos in general just didn't really work for me, though I did eventually get used to it.  Maybe this sort of thing works better for people who have pictures and movies pop up in their heads when they read books, but that simply isn't me.  Otherwise, an interesting introductiory book that makes mind-bending subjects not so complicated, while managing to be entertaining at the same time.

*Except String Theory.  I think you need to have ingested a substantial quantity of magic mushrooms for that to make any sense.

Cosmic Cabaret: Science Fiction Romance Anthology
Cosmic Cabaret: Science Fiction Romance Anthology - Alicia Kat Vancil,Athena Grayson,Dena Garson,Kerry Adrienne,Selene Grace Silver,Cailin Briste,Blaire Edens,Rosalie Redd,Jayne Fury,Diana Rivis,SFR Shooting Stars,Cathryn Cade (CJ Cade),Tessa McFionn,Jenna Lincoln
Cosmic Cabaret is an anthology of science fiction romance stories that all take place upon the LS Quantum. Each story is individual, with separate characters and situations.

This is an AMAZING anthology. You could even say it was out of this world! (Sorry, it had to be done!) Some of the stories involve insta-love, some of them have loved from afar for years. Some are people on the run, some are princes and princesses, some are both prince/princess AND on the run. What I'm trying to say is that there is something here for everyone.

Each story is very well written, with characters and situations that are completely relate-able, so long as you keep the sci-fi theme fresh in your mind. From doctors to spies to male dancers to Burlesque dancers, this anthology has it all. I didn't feel like a single story let it down, although I do obviously have my favourites. I have found some new (to me) authors that I will be reading more of, which is always a good thing. Absolutely recommended by me, and I'm hoping for more to come!

* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and my comments here are my honest opinion. *

Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this box set. Welcome aboard the LS Quantum, a star ship to rival all the star ships. 13 stories based on board and around the entertainers and the guests, finding love among the stars was never their plans, but who are they to mess with fate?? I mostly enjoyed these. One or two I didn't read, and there was no one that stood out as they usually do, for me anyway, in these box sets. Some authors I've not read before, and I find these box sets the best way to find new to me authors. We have humans and aliens, princes and rock stars, murders to solve and thieves to track. All the ones I read were well written, with no spelling or editing errors I spotted. Some are more explicit than others, and some carry are darker undertone. Some are a little more way sci-fi based and some are just two people falling in love on a space ship. A great box set, great value for the £2.95/$3.89 (Nov 8th 2017) is on sale for. 4 solid stars **same worded review will appear elsewhere**

Oxygen: The Molecule that Made the World by Nick Lane
Oxygen: The Molecule that Made the World - Nick Lane

This is an extremely interesting and well written book about oxygen - how oxygen spurred the evolution of life, the functioning of oxygen in biological systems, aging, how oxygen relates to everyday life (besides breathing), amongst others. The nice thing about this book is that the author assumes his readers are intelligent and so doesn't simplify his writing or the concepts so much that it practically turns into gibberish.

NOTE:

The author's view of junk DNA is a bit dated - the book was published in 2002 and research on junk DNA has advanced since then. Some other information might also be dated, but that is simply how science and science writing work.  If you are intelligent enough to read this book, you should also be intelligent enough not to swallow everything you read - hook, line and sinker.
