4 Out Of 5 STARS for Rolling In the Deep by Mira Grant
Rolling in the Deep - Mira Grant,Teri Schnaubelt

Killer Mermaids
Cruise Ship Ride From Hell
They All Die In The End
Novella Prequel
For Into The Drowning Deep
With Audio Performed by Teri Schnaubelt

Killer mermaids for the win...I listened to this after already having listened to Into the Drowning Deep...so I knew the deal with the mermaids but it was still ultimately a diabolical foray into the deep waters of the Mariana Trench. The characters are rather unlikeable, so I wasn't sad to see them come to their dastardly end (not really a spoiler).

A super quick listen that I enjoyed immensely.  The Audio was also fantastically performed, I do believe I liked this narrator more than the girl who narrated Into the Drowning Deep, even.  These two books could be listened to in any order, I think either way will work.

Plot 4.2/5

4 Out Of 5 STARS for In the Shadow of the Spindrift House by Mira Grant
In the Shadow of the Spindrift House - Mira Grant

Creepy House

๏ ๏ ๏  My Thoughts ๏ ๏ ๏

A weird (or maybe just weird to me) thing about this book...it doesn't seem to be coming out as an eBook...just a hardcover, on every site I looked at.  It also has an illustrator...does that mean it has illustrations??? That could be cool, especially if they are by the same person who created the cover...and speaking of the cover, wow, this one is fantabulous.

With its poetic, atmospheric writing and the creep-factor of the Spindrift House itself, I found myself drawn to this story.  While, considered to be a Novella, but still clocking in at 200 pages, it ultimately reads fairly quickly, almost too quickly...because the ending is rather abrupt.

Mira Grant also writes as Seanan McGuire and I've never read a Seanan McGuire book...but judging from the covers/synopsis of those books, this story felt more like one of those, rather than a Mira Grant book.  It has a decidedly paranormal feel to it, after all.

4.5 Out Of 5 STARS for Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant

๏ ๏ ๏  My Thoughts ๏ ๏ ๏

My review in one word:  Intense

From the intense character development to the intense action, and of course...the intense killer mermaids.   This could be an epic movie, in the right hands...

While it's debatable whether or not you should call them Mermaids...and I'm not going to say any more than that...these beings are insanely cool and super-scary.  The last half of this book is seriously good, and the first half sets up the second half, with character development that is very in-depth...maybe a little too much...maybe not.  It all depends on what you prefer.

I am really happy I listened to this, it makes the slow sections easier to bear.  I even used an Audible Credit to do so, and I don't regret it.  There is a prequel (Rolling in the Deep) to this and I wished I had known about it, beforehand, I would have read it first.

The fairy tale you thought you knew...The story of the Sea Witch, the villainess from Hans Christian Anderson's classic tale The Little Mermaid.
Sea Witch - Sarah Henning

Sea Witch

Sarah Henning

Ever since her best friend Anna died, Evie has been an outcast in her small fishing town. Hiding her talents, mourning her loss, drowning in her guilt.

Then a girl with an uncanny resemblance to Anna appears on the shore, and the two girls catch the eyes of two charming princes. Suddenly Evie feels like she might finally have a chance at her own happily ever after.

But magic isn’t kind, and her new friend harbors secrets of her own. She can’t stay in Havnestad—or on two legs—without Evie’s help. And when Evie reaches deep into the power of her magic to save her friend’s humanity—and her prince’s heart—she discovers, too late, what she’s bargained away.

This wasn't exactly what I was expecting…at first its girls dancing with boys and "wouldn't it be fun if we got together with cousins, what fun we would have, oh la".  Ugh.  There was a little bit of darkness and witchiness lurking in the story at that point.  Then about 60% into it…BAM…the story takes a twist down the dark & nasty…

Overall that turn made this, by far, a better story than it was shaping up to be.  So if your willing to hang in there through the less than worthwhile parts of the story, I think it will end up being a mostly satisfying read, as long as you don't pick apart its inconsistencies. And especially, if you like the Little Mermaid, although it's more of a backstory than a retelling.
