"The Night Watch" Watch #1 by Sergei Lukyanenko - compelling Russian urban fantasy
Night Watch: Book One in the Night Watch Series - Sergei Lukyanenko

Don't be put off by the terrible movie that was made from this book. It and its successors in the series are worth reading.

There is much that is alien and different in the fantasy story of the continuing struggle between good and evil.

Most of it comes not from the world that Lukyanenko constructs but from the distinctly Russian assumptions and perspectives that he brings to the fantasy. When the Russians imagine a struggle between light and dark both concepts are quite different from the Hollywood version.

One image that stuck with me is a joke graphic on a t-shirt showing a World War II Russian solider ready to cut an American solidier's throat open from behind. The Russian solider is saying: "Let me explain who REALLY won the Second World War, Comrade."

The concept of the being able to step into the twilight and see and act differently that forms the basis for the magical conflict is fully imagined and beautifully described.

Andrew Bromfield has produced an English translation that keeps the pace of the book without losing its exotic feel.

The plot will keep you turning the pages. Betrayal is the order of the day and no-one's motives are obvious, sometimes even to themselves.

The assumptions and ethics of the book will have you reflecting on whether some of the things you take for granted about how the world works are true.

Night Watch: Book One in the Night Watch Series - Sergei Lukyanenko

This might have been a 3.5 but I was just itching for it to end so I demoted it a half star. I had such high hopes for this book and though they weren't completely dashed, they were in no way lived up to. After the initial paranormal bits, which are at first confusing and afterwards a bit annoying, the book is mainly a bunch of cops and robbers novellas. I will definitely read the rest of the series, not only because I already purchased them but mainly because I want to believe that it redeems itself somewhere along the line. These books will definitely not be at the too of my ever growing, unspeakably large pile of To Be Read books though

Another great installment in the series
Black Arts - Faith Hunter

I have been reading this series from the very beginning and the latest installment certainly does not disappoint. Other reviewers have summarized the plot, so I won’t repeat that; I’ll just mention some of the things that I liked about this book:

1. The Everheart’s are back. I really like Molly, Evan, and the kids. In this book, Molly is in trouble, and Evan is suitably worried and angry and protective. The kids are adorable, although, in what I assume is foreshadowing future books, Angie is starting to exhibit scary-strange powers.

2. Jane’s relationships with two of the key men in her life change. Leo admits something to Jane that surprises her, and Ricky may not be available as Jane’s on-again-off-again fling after this book (sorry for the vagueness, trying avoid spoilers here). Both incidents set up interesting possibilities for future books.

3. I like that Jane gets to be “girly” sometimes, and I don’t mean that in a pejorative way. She gets to dress up in fancy clothes, but she is still tough and capable. She shows moments of emotion over men and her changing relationships. She has doubts about things she has done in the past, even when she was a child, and what that means about her character in the present. I also like that Jane can now let Beast come to the surface in front of others (her nature was exposed in the previous book); she seems more comfortable with what she is.

4. Beast. What’s more to say. I’ve really enjoyed the evolution of Beast over the series, and the development of Beast’s “verbal” and intellectual ability that no doubt comes from having been bonded with Jane. Beast’s visceral emotional response to the Everheat kids and to Jane’s various men never grows old.

Overall, I highly recommend this book to fans of the series.

Volcano Watch (The Forensic Geology Series, #2)
Volcano Watch (The Forensic Geology Seri... Volcano Watch (The Forensic Geology Series, #2) - Toni Dwiggins I picked this book up based on the forensic geology involved. I thought, well, it might be interesting, as I love the 'end of the world' sort of books and movies. I wasn't really expecting a whole lot, just a good few hours of relaxation.

Imagine my surprise when I was totally captivated by everything about the book. The forensic geology begins with a murder, and continues through another. The author did her homework - I checked her website, and don't see that she is a forensic geologist, but she did a really great job. The forensics and vulcanology are well researched, but the thing I really admire is how well she writes a story intertwining forensics, geology and vulcanology. She did a beautiful job. Add into that the exceptional job she did in describing the USGS and FEMA and how they handle these situations. But what really grabbed me and didn't let me go is her writing such strong characters. The main female characters are well drawn and believable. Not exceptional, and one of them was irritating as all get out. But exceptionally believable and, even though you might not care too much about one of them, you still understand her. What really grabbed me though was how well she wrote a sociopathic personality in the book. Ego and self indulgence taken to it's furthest extremes . . extreme, but still wholly believable.

This is the first of this author's books I have read (it was a freebie through freebooksy.com) but I will be very happy to read another.
