Nach einer durchzechten Nacht findet Janek Mitter seine Frau Eva ertränkt in der Badewanne. An die Ereignisse der Nacht kann er sich nicht erinnern, aber er weiß, dass er sie nicht umgebracht hat - aber ohne Beweise des Gegenteils wird er in eine psychiatrische Anstalt eingewiesen. Doch etwas irritiert Hauptkommissar Van Veeteren an diesem Fall - und das Gefühl wird bestärkt, als Mitter selbst umgebracht wird.

 

Dies ist ein ziemlich geradliniger Krimi, der ohne große Überraschungen auskommt, trotzdem aber recht spanned ist und letztlich die gewohnten familiären Untiefen aufweist. Nesser verwendet seine Zeit weniger, den Kommissar Van Veeteren direkt vorzustellen, als ihn tüfteln und Puzzlestückchen zusammensetzen zu lassen. Jedenfalls ist er mit Jagdinstinkt ausgestattet und lässt sich nicht abbringen, wenn er mal Lunte gerochen hat. Im Privatleben schaut's trister aus: Ehefrau Renate kommt immer wieder mal angekrochen, der Sohn sitzt im Gefängnis und der Tochter steht er auch nicht gerade nah (nur ihrem alten Hund, den er sitten darf).

 

Insgesamt ein interessanter Beginn, wenn auch nicht ganz so fesselnd wie der Anfang von Nessers späterer Barbarotti-Serie. Aber ich werde wohl zu Van Veeteren zurückkommen.

Wow, one of the other reviewers commented on the continually dreary weather that seems to form a background for this series of mysteries, and I can certainly see what she meant in this particular case. The novel starts with a gruesome murder, then a disappearance, and finally another even more gruesome murder. All of the victims are dreary individuals, as are most of their acquaintances and their families and their few friends. This is perhaps ironically appropriate, as most of the detectives investigating the situation are dreary folks as well, suffering from fatigue, but certainly not from overexertion, their busy investigations are continually interrupted by frequent breaks for coffee, for snacks, for drinks mooched from the dreary people they interview, and for meals. As a result, the investigation proceeds at a dreary pace. Finally the story comes to a dreary end. In summary, a dreary experience overall, although the remarks of the participants are often darkly humorous.

The first case with Inspector Van Veeteren off the case so I can't quite figure out why the series is continuing, but it has the same high quality expected out of Nesser. This book had some nice twists to it, but I couldn't help feeling that some of the questions from "side stories" weren't answered. Thus, 4 stars vs. the typical 5 I have given Nesser's works in the past.

Great plot, decent writing but I am not that keen on the main protagonists - seems most of it is based on intuition... However, I would read another one
