Didn't deliver on promise
When a Lady Deceives (Her Majesty's Most Secret Service) - Tara Kingston

Intriguing elements and dark mysterious hero but only given a promise of that never delivered. Story plods along with not much happening but repeated scenes and romance drags out only to be given a few bedroom scenes without much relationship depth.
Tempted to read the next in series though because of promise of author.

Reading Update: 40%
When a Lady Deceives (Her Majesty's Most Secret Service) - Tara Kingston

“I must say, I rather liked you better as a scoundrel,” she said, tempting him. And fate.

He prowled toward her. “You’re enough to drive a man to Bedlam.”

“You say the most romantic things.”

Welcome Tara Kingston for a Hosting Spotlight!

Thank you for hosting me today, Sissy. It’s a pleasure to stop by your blog and discuss books and reading romance.

Since I was a girl, not quite a teen, I’ve loved novels with elements of mystery and romance. My mother read gothic romances by Victoria Holt and Barbara Michaels, and before long, I was devouring these tales of endangered governesses and brooding heroes as fast as I could get my hands on them. As a teenager, my tastes veered to passionate historical romances with alpha-male heroes, but I never lost my appreciation for romance with a bit of mystery.

I’ve been thinking about my favorite historical romances. There are so many books and authors that I love, it’s really hard to narrow the list down. My favorites change depending on my mood. Some of the romances I treasure are recent additions to my keeper shelf, while many have long occupied a spot on my bookcase (and now, my e-reader). A few stand out as being particularly close to my heart. Here are a sampling of those books that will always have a place in this reader’s heart:

~ Thief of Hearts by Teresa Medeiros
A to-die-for pirate and a gorgeous, charming bodyguard (who wears glasses…one of my weaknesses in a hero!) in the same romance—What’s a heroine to do? I adore this spirited tale of intrigue, revenge, redemption, and true love.

~ For the Roses by Julie Garwood

One of the most touching and romantic stories I’ve ever read, For the Roses holds a special place in my heart. After I read this book, I devoured Julie Garwood’s books about the Claybourne brothers. This tale of a young woman in the American West, her four brothers-of-the-heart, and the man who captures her heart showcases family loyalties (even if those family ties are not through blood) and true love in the form of a man with a secret that may well shatter the heroine’s life. Of course, there is a happily-ever-after. The hero is not only handsome and seductive, but he’s scorchingly smart… truly sigh-worthy!

~ Ravished by Amanda Quick

A brooding, enigmatic, and protective hero and endearing bluestocking heroine in a Regency-set love story with a touch of mystery and Beauty and the Beast feel—I adored it!

~ The Wings of the Falcon by Barbara Michaels

This intrigue-filled old-school Gothic romance features an unusual setting (Italy), a bit of mystery, and a smidge of adventure. An orphaned heroine encounters two handsome and enigmatic brothers—one is a heroic revolutionary in disguise, a man who’s captured her heart. This book may feel a little corny to some, but it holds a special place in my heart.

My taste for intrigue factors into my own historical romances. My latest release, When A Lady Dares, features a heroine who’s a covert agent drawn into a sinister mystery with life-and-death stakes. Here’s a little about the story:

A daring agent confronts a notorious rogue, but who's seducing who?

In Victorian London, secret agent Sophie Atherton connives her way into a phony medium’s confidence, searching for clues to a string of mysterious deaths. When archaeologist Gavin Stanwyck seeks out the charlatan’s services, Sophie suspects he’s after more than a long-lost heirloom. Their electric attraction storms her defenses, but she steels her heart. Uniting to survive a sinister plot, the daring spy and cynical rake must tear down their defenses and learn to trust their hearts.

Back to Your Love: When a Lady Dares by Tara Kingston
When a Lady Dares - Tara Kingston

'When a Lady Dares' by Tara Kingston is book Two in the "Her Majesty's Most Secret Service" series.
This is the story of Sophie Atherton and Gavin Stanwyck. I have read the previous book but feel this can easily be a standalone book.
Sophie is undercover as a medium's assistant when she meets Gavin. Sophie works for the Crown and also works as a journalist for the Herald under a different name. So she is used to repeating lies and knowing when someone is lying. So when she meets Gavin who is a treasure hunter she knows that he isn't telling the truth.
Gavin is looking for answers on his friend's Peter death. To get those answers, Gavin poses as a Treasure Hunter. Gavin thinks a Spiritualist may have the information he is looking so he needs to hide who he really is. But Gavin has found the Spiritualist assistant, Sophie is a temptation he might not be able to resit.
This book was a great mystery mixed with romance story that once you got a few pages in you wanted to see what would happen next. Gavin and Sophie I thought had good chemistry and both were very likable characters.
I enjoyed this book and can't wait to read more from Ms. Kingston.
"My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read."

Good Story and Characters
The Highlander Who Loved Me - Tara Kingston

Johanna Templeton came from England to America to look after her sick sister and niece Laurel. Johanna’s sister passes away and Johanna stays to take care of Laurel while her brother in law continued to disappear from business trips. When he decided to take Laurel to Scotland Johanna didn’t know anything was wrong until her brother in law was killed and Laurel kidnapped. Johanna had received a ransom letter for Laurel Johanna has to take a certain book to the kidnappers. When Johanna brings the book to the kidnappers they don’t have Laurel.  The ransom was actually about finding  the map to the demon’s heart- a rare ruby linked to the MacMasters family.Johanna is rescued by a Highlander Connor and he is determined to protect Johanna. Johanna and Connor are attracted to each other but armed assassins are determined to get Johanna to their boss Connor does not stay in one place long because of being a spy. That leaves little if any time for a relationship.. Connor is on a mission as a spy for Queen Victoria. When meeting Connor tries to keep her troubles to herself. .

I enjoyed this story. I enjoyed the intrigue and suspense. This is fast paced. The plot was good and I definitely enjoyed reading this. But I did feel this book was a little long and could have been shorter. I did find it hard to put down as I wanted to know what what was going to happen next. But I thought Johanna was overly distrustful of Connor when he had rescued her and felt maybe she had an issue with trusting men or maybe just trusting. This story had a lot in it: adventure, suspense, mystery, romance, a demon’s heart jem, action, murder, thieves, kidnappers, artifacts, passion, betrayal, greed, and so much more. I really liked the characters and the ins and outs of this story and I recommend.
