The Library of Unrequited Love - Sophie Divry
The Library of Unrequited Love - Sophie Divry,Siân Reynolds

A novella translated from the French, The Library of Unrequited Love takes the form of a librarian's monologue to - or, rather, at - a reader locked in overnight. It's a bittersweet little book about loneliness, literature and love, with the unnamed librarian hankering after a researcher named Martin who visits her library regularly (though we know or suspect that she'll never pluck up the courage to say anything).

It's a quick, enjoyable read; Sian Reynolds' translation reads well, though I don't have the original to compare. Would be good as a holiday read, inhaled in an afternoon.

There's so much in this little book
The Library of Unrequited Love - Sophie Divry,Siân Reynolds

I learned. I laughed. I highlighted. I really enjoyed this little read. I will definitely read it again. If you love books, libraries and laughter I say give it a go.

"All the hundreds of books pouring off the presses, ninety-nine percent of them they'd do better to use the paper for wrapping takeaways. And for libraries, it's a disaster."

"The publishers ought to put a sell-by date on them, because they're just consumer goods."

**I'm enjoying this. The Librarian is hilarious and I have plenty of fantastic highlights so far.

The Library of Unrequited Love, by Sophie Divry
The Library of Unrequited Love - Sophie Divry

I know so many people who would hate the librarian depicted in Sophie Divry's novella, The Library of Unrequited Love. The unnamed librarian confesses to playing tricks on architects who visit the library in revenge for the dark basement she has to work in. She thinks most visitors to the library are uncultured morons. She hates noisy people. The unnamed librarian is one of the reasons people don't like to go to libraries...

The Library of Unrequited Love
The Library of Unrequited Love - Sophie Divry,Siân Reynolds
Read from August 13 to 14, 2014 — I own a copy

This is short story about a dull, lonely, modest woman who happens to work in the Geography section of a library. The Geography section of this particular library is housed in the basement. One morning before the library has opened, the woman discovers someone, identified only as " a reader", sleeping in the basement. Apparently, the woman has seen the reader around the library and while she is startled to find someone sleeping in her section, she is not too concerned and thus begins discussing all things related to the library. This is a woman who has a love/hate relationship with the library, after maintaining this position for twenty-five years. Her musings cover the explanation of the Dewey decimal classification, how it works, favorite authors, a failed love life, an infatuation with a young man named Martin, her observaitons of library patrons and their habits, and many other related library topics. Simply put, this is about a lonely librarian, with immense knowledge about libraries and books and not enough physical, human contact. It kind of left me feeling sad. ~And lonely.~ Next time I go to my library, I will certainly make sure to tell my librarian hello.
