Review: The Wicked King (The Folk of the Air #2) by Holly Black
The Wicked King - Holly Black

You must be strong enough to strike and strike and strike again without tiring.

The first lesson is to make yourself that strong.

Jude has bound the wicked king, Cardan, to her, and made herself the power behind the throne. Navigating the constantly shifting political alliances of Faerie would be difficult enough if Cardan were biddable. But he does everything in his power to humiliate and undermine her, even as his fascination with her remains undiminished.

When it becomes all too clear that someone close to Jude means to betray her, threatening her life and the lives of everyone she loves, Jude must uncover the traitor and fight her own complicated feelings for Cardan to maintain control as a mortal in a faerie world.

4.5 ★

WOW !!! This book gave me whiplash !!! That Ending…. Lets just say it’s been two days and I’m still not sure what to think and a bit angry about it.

Like I said the whole book is a rollercoaster and there is nto much I can say to not spoil it and believe me, you don’t want to be spoiled with this one.

I will make it sweet and shirt , ot at least I try  lo.

The book starts off 5 some months after the events of the last book, Cardan is King, Jude pulling his strings,( or is she?) . To be honest, I think Jude is getting a bit power-hungry and all that string pulling is getting to her head a bit. But then again that is all that she has left. She is still on the outs with her family, her fae family that is. She is working with the Court of Shadows and of course working The High King. But all that is getting more and more complicated as she seems to be having more and more feelings for Cardan. The water fae also coming out to play and things get a bit … wet and nasty.

As thing heat up with the underwater fae, and things getting a bit out of control she starts working again with Madoc. Of course he is him and yu never know if you can trust him or not.

I will say as much as an A-$$ -Hole he is ….. I really love him and always looked forward to parts with him.

Cardan was not as much in the book, as I hoped and if again you never know with him, I liked him, I hated him , I loved him and I never fully trusted him but I still wanted more of him. I have a real love-hate relationship with him for sure.

Jude, most if the time I thought she is a bitch but others I just felt bad for her and asked why she keeps doing that do herself, even though she could just up and go to the human world.

Overall I really liked the book and learned quickly, you can’t trust anyone, no matter what or who.  There is lots if humor, action and even more betrayal going on , it is pretty fast pact and with all the action going on the book reads super-fast.

The end …… DID NOT see that coming…. NOT in a million years…. OMG I was soo angry and confused. Well done Holly Black, that was one heck of a twist I didn’t see coming.

I can’t wait for the next book to see how she will finish it …….. Because I’m not even sure where this can go. Well I do but I don’t think I would like that lol.

Overall great book, few things I disliked but nothing major and not even worth mentioning.

I rate it 4.5 ★

The Wicked King / Holly Black
The Wicked King - Holly Black

After the jaw-dropping revelation that Oak is the heir to Faerie, Jude must keep her younger brother safe. To do so, she has bound the wicked king, Cardan, to her, and made herself the power behind the throne. Navigating the constantly shifting political alliances of Faerie would be difficult enough if Cardan were easy to control. But he does everything in his power to humiliate and undermine her even as his fascination with her remains undiminished.

When it becomes all too clear that someone close to Jude means to betray her, threatening her own life and the lives of everyone she loves, Jude must uncover the traitor and fight her own complicated feelings for Cardan to maintain control as a mortal in a Faerie world.

Move over, Machiavelli, now we have Jude to give you a run for your manipulating money!

For a very young woman, she has managed to make everyone dance to her tune and has out-maneuvered much more experienced politickers. Now her challenge is to control herself! When she first placed Cardan on the throne of Elfhame, he was more interested in drinking and carousing than in ruling. Will she still be able to control him if he develops an interest in governing?

After the very dirty trick that she played on Cardan to get him on the throne, the tables are turned and he proves that Jude is not the only one who can play hard-ball. When Jude shows him how to use emotional manipulation to get information, she did not expect him to learn the lesson or to practice on her.

Black has written a fascinating second stage in their relationship--one in which neither one of them is willing to admit how attracted they are to each other. They are still very much at odds. Perhaps I’m wrong, but I keep feeling like they will eventually be a couple and I can hardly wait for the third book to see how Black accomplishes this about face.

OMG, I have to wait until some time in 2020 before I get my next hit of Jude & Cardan! It is going to be an agonizing wait.

Oh, and incidentally, that is a gorgeous cover illustration!

TBR Thursday
Decluttering at the Speed of Life: Winning Your Never-Ending Battle with Stuff - Dana White
The Wicked King - Holly Black
Lies Sleeping - Ben Aaronovitch
I Still Miss My Man But My Aim Is Getting Better - Sarah Shankman
The Interpretation of Dreams: The Complete and Definitive Text - Sigmund Freud,James Strachey

OMG, how did it get to be Thursday already?

I'm currently going to finish The Doomsday Book this evening (or know the reason why!)

I'm also working on Steel Beach and Wicked.  All three of these books are part of my Science Fiction & Fantasy Reading Project.

I think I am going to take a week's vacation next week--for 3 reasons.  My Aunt's funeral is this Saturday and I just want to take some time after that.  A somewhat difficult coworker returns after 3 weeks holidays, and I need one more week before I have to deal with her again.  Finally, because my house looks like a homeless person has been squatting in it and I need to get caught up on so many tasks!

Decluttering at the Speed of Life will be my motivational reading during this time!  The other books will just be good fun when I get to them.

It's also been damn cold here in Alberta and I am wanting to cocoon at home for a couple of days.

Hope you all have great reading lined up for yourselves!

Way To Leave Me Hanging Ms Black
The Wicked King - Holly Black

ARGUH ! Dirty rotten author tricked me. Well played Ms Black Well Played. I never saw that ending coming, not a hint. I finished it an hour ago and I'm still steaming and fuming at all of the characters. The story followed a semi predictable path till the last 1/8 then it went off the charts into..... can't say but there is a cliffhanger + to delight and frustrate us all.
What can I saw about the book. They all played the fairy games, played them well and wicked. There was death, lies, kissing, dancing, arrows, knives, swords, crowns, cheating, vows, betrayals, fish and seawater. Things were not resolved, and the next book can't come out soon enough.
yeh I loved it
