# 39 - The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
The Hate U Give - Angie Thomas

I’ve seen this book everywhere in the last couple of weeks; I’ve seen the many praises for it and decided to get the audiobook with my Audible credit of the month. I was not disappointed.

Let me start by telling how great the performance was. Just the performance in itself was enough to make it a nice read. All the rest made it amazing and unforgettable. This book will stay with me for a long, long time.

Living in a country where multiculturalism is not that present (well, it is, but it is not the US) and where guns are not allowed, all these news about black kids getting shot, shootings in schools etc. are disturbing, but seem far away. It does not happen here. The Hate U Give really made me understand a lot more about the struggle of minorities in the US. I’m not saying, minorities do not struggle here in Europe, because I know they do. But this story takes place in the US, so let’s not compare this, it is not the point.

First thing that shocked me: people are scared of the police. The police is supposed to protect you. When I see cops in the street, I feel safer (still not safe, I don’t often feel safe in the city, but I do not fear for my life everyday I’m out). I just can’t imagine living in a world where you fear cops when you have done nothing wrong. Maybe it is naïve of me; but it is totally crazy and not right at all.

Second: Starr and her friends are kids. KIDS for god’s sake. Kids are suppose to be careless, go to school and enjoy going out with their friends. Not grieving for their best friends who got shot for nothing. I had shivers every time I was listening to this book.

I know what happened it this book is not 100% fiction. It happened to real people in real life. It happened before, it still happens today and it will continue in the future. That sucks. It should not be okay. I cannot put it into words.

The story in itself was great, the characters all seem real and it was impossible not to feel sad, scared, happy, hurt and joyful alongside them. I could not not feel for them.

The last lines of this book were too much for me. I was driving to work and I had to stop. I felt empty and I felt angry. I felt disgusted and betrayed by the world we live in. It was too much.

It was not easy to read, it was actually really hard. I definitely recommend this book to everybody.

I did not edit this review. I just wrote whatever I was feeling and I think it is better this way. Sorry if it does not make sense.

On a happier note, I was actually switching between listening to this book and listening to Bloodlust by Body Count (if you don't know them, it is Ice-T's band). This songs was particularly relevant: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_0xYamFYYI
