Tor.com's Ebook of the Month Club - Free *and* possibly a candidate for the Magical Realism square
The Necessary Beggar - Susan Palwick

One of my friends on Goodreads called it a hybrid of SF and magical realism, and a couple people tagged it as "magical realism." So it'd maybe work? I haven't read it myself.

You have until 11:59 PM ET on August 16th to download it (US and Canada only).

Tor.com’s eBook of the Month Club: The Collapsing Empire by John Scalzi
The Collapsing Empire - John Scalzi

I haven't posted about the last few (and forgot to download them in time as well). I had thought this was one of their offerings in a previous month, but I don't see it in my records, so either I didn't download it or I'm remembering wrong.

Anyway, folks in the US and Canada have until 11:59 PM ET March 15th to download this.

The Only Harmless Great Thing
The Only Harmless Great Thing - Brooke Bolander

The Tor.com Ebook of the Month club was recently brought to my attention (it was here on BL but I forgot by whom), and this was January's pick so I wanted to give it a try and went into it without any prior knowledge. Imaging my surprise when one of the narratives is from the POV of an elephant.

What unraveled was a wonderful short story, which was part alternate history where elephants have taken over the jobs after the unfortunate Radium girls start dying, part social commentary.

In the beginning I was afraid that three different narratives in one novella would prove to be too much, but in the end I thought it was just fine. Very interesting, I would definitely like to read more by Brooke Bolander.

Tor.com’s eBook of the Month Club: Acheron by Sherrilyn Kenyon
Acheron - Sherrilyn Kenyon

This is available from August 14th to 11:59 PM ET August 17th, US and Canada only.

I used to be a huge fan of this series, but I think this is the book that made me quit reading it. Kenyon is big on tortured heroes (often literally tortured), and she went overboard in this book. Plus, after 14 books (or 13? 11? not sure) of anticipating who she might pair Acheron off with, I recall being extremely disappointed by his heroine, who was one of the more uninteresting ones in the series (or maybe I was just really over the series by then).

It's a huge book, though, and if you're interested in the series at all, I think you could easily skip to it after reading one or more of the earlier entries in the series. Just be aware that there is a LOT of on-page suffering.

This month's free ebook from TOR (Macmillan) -- last 24 hours to get free
A Darker Shade of Magic - V.E. Schwab

Yay!  I got my email for this one without signing up still yet again.  Maybe (I say maybe because it looked more like the usual newsletter which had a blurb about free ebook than the ebook notice I used to get).

Boo!  Says was made available June 12 and can only download through June 15.  But, I just got the email.

At any rate, hurry up to download  from https://ebookclub.tor.com/ .  To see publisher's details on book - https://us.macmillan.com/books/9780765376466
