Down to Oath
Down to Oath - Tyrolin Puxty

I liked this, especially the oddball main character, Codi. She lives in a world where everything is cookie cutter, no differences amongst the people, nothing exciting... then there is some excitement in the form of a child in a childless village. Codi learns there is more out there, and she has the power of choice, BIG choice.

I wish this were a bit longer. There was so much that could have been expanded, if done right this could be a great story.

Colt Harper: Esteemed Vampire Cat
Colt Harper: Esteemed Vampire Cat - Tyrolin Puxty

Colt Harper: Esteemed Vampire Cat was at once both completely absurd and a very nice read. It was just as weird as the title would make you expect, although the Esteemed part is mostly only through Colt's own eyes.

Colt is sent to do community theatre with some other misbehaving monsters for killing humans, again. If they are not successfully putting on a play at the end of it, they will be taken to 'The Valley'. It's were the bad monsters go (and for some reason have to keep running, for ever). All the while, Colt and his friends are being hunted and Colt's 'borrowed' body starts acting up. But maybe, he's not as alone as he always feared.

Do not expect too much of a plot or a lot of world building, but if you're looking for some laughs, and like the absurd, this is your thing. Tyrolin Puxty's other series (Broken Dolls) makes an appearance, so keep an eye out for that.

Colt Harper: Esteemed Vampire Cat
Colt Harper: Esteemed Vampire Cat - Tyrolin Puxty 3,5 stars

It was a quick and fun read!

In spite of much flowing blood and many dead bodies.

But don’t feel pity for those humans: they DID hurt cats, and…they were just annoying and disgusting, like all humans are, it is why they deserved to die. At least it is a life philosophy of Colt Harper, a self-proclaimed master vampire cat, the last alive of his art on the Earth. Only it is not the rules that could be tolerated by the council. The council will not allow any more human killings. Times have changed. For his behavior Colt is sentenced to community service in a small-town community theater. Even worse is that he has to put up with two further companions in misfortune: Jax, a sensible werewolf ("A warewolf? Oh great. Just great. They detest vampire cats, and they're always hungry.") and Leshi, a quirky tickling female monster. ("The one thing worse than humans are other monsters").

But who could imagine that this tiny town is swarmed with mendacious monsters, insidious chasers, who hunt monsters, pesky humans (don’t forget, our trio is on probation), and that the owner director of the community theater Saffron-Jade herself is…image

A cheeky paranormal comedy, full of humor and action. with an eccentric narrator, many hilarious moments, an easy-going holiday read.

Shattered Girls
Shattered Girls - Tyrolin Puxty

I read Broken Dolls, the first book in this series, and I really enjoyed it. However, I was a little worried where it would be going from here, as it seemed a rather closed story.

While the story of Shattered Girls is enjoyable as well, I didn't think it completely lived up to the expectations created by the first book. Because that was so original it was a slight disappointment that this more or less followed the normal structure for (Dystopian) novels.

This doesn't mean that is wasn't good. It was good, just not as good as I had hoped. Ella and Gabby were nice characters and also the other characters make an appearance. I'm curious to see where the story is going.

Broken Dolls
Broken Dolls - Tyrolin Puxty

It's been a while since I could say: This is not like anything I can remember I've ever read. In the sea of (slightly) Dystopian YA Broken Dolls has managed to do something special: be original.

Ella is a doll, and has been so for 30 years. She knows that before she was human, but can't remember anything of that times and is not particularly worried either. She lives with The Professor, who created her. But when he introduces a new doll to Ella, things are about to change.

I liked it. The story remains quite small. It's mostly Ella, the Professor and Gabby, his grandchild and they stay mostly in the house. I couldn't see the major twist coming. Some revelations about Ella gave quite a sad twist to the story. I wonder what is going to happen in the next book. The only thing I would have liked to see a bit more of was the worldbuilding. Exactly what is this infection? Why is it such a disaster?

Broken Dolls is the first book in a series with the same name.
