THE GRAVEYARD BOOK by Neil Gaiman
The Graveyard Book - Neil Gaiman
Nobody Owens is raised in a cemetary after his family is murdered.  He was supposed to die that night but wandered away before the murderer caught him.  He is safe as long as he stays in the cemetary.  He can see the spirits of the graveyard's inhabitants.  He learns from them on the physical as well as spiritual side of life.  He grows.  He gets into trouble.  He needs Silas and the rest of the spirits and guardians of the graveyard.

I enjoyed this book.  It is my favorite Neil Gaiman book so far.  I loved the characters and the story.  It was fun and different from much of my reading.  If I owned this book, it would be a keeper.

Nonfiction Fun!
American Revolution - Stuart Murray

I love the idea of using this book to introduce a lesson on American Revolution, as well as, integrating nonfiction text. I would use this book in upper elementary, preferably 5th or 6th grade. It would be a great review on nonfiction and introduction to American Revolution. I would have an anchor chart with the elements of nonfiction text. I would then have an anchor chart with the facts about the American Revolution.

Diversity in the classroom
Amazing Grace - Mary Hoffman,Caroline Binch

i LOVE this book! We read it today in lit block & it is a great lesson to teach about diversity. It allows the students to know that they can do anything they want and that their gender, skin color, or even religion will not effect that! It also teaches the students that they should not tell anyone that they can't do anything. I would have an anchor chart and ask the students to identify each time discrimination is used and what they would have done to prevent it. This book would be a great lesson for any grade, but I, personally, would teach it to upper grade levels like 3rd-6th. With all the diversity in not only the classroom, but the real world, it is a very important lesson to teach from the beginning.
