Such a cute fairy tale.
These nine princesses are highly unusual. I won't tell you why, but I will tell you that they are smart. This novella centers on the eldest princess, Maelyn. She is a great ruler, smart, beautiful and fair. She is not one to hurt her family or loved ones, and basically saves them from an evil source. It was a quick and delightful read!

 

 

 

 

Mary Margaret Miller is a young girl growing up on a farm in Miller's Valley, a small community in rural America in the 1960's.

 

There's nothing unusual about her family or her life: she has two older brothers - one's away at college, the other is a lovable rogue, her father works the farm, her mother is a nurse at the local hospital, an aunt lives in a small cottage on the farm.

 

The only thing that makes Miller's Valley different from thousands of similar rural hamlets is the government has plans to raise a nearby dam and flood the valley displacing the few families who live there.

 

This a theme that runs throughout the book looming over the lives of the Miller family though never really effecting them since there is no set timeline for the flooding.

 

Through the point of view of Mary Margaret the reader comes to know a loving and, more or less, functioning family, their friends and neighbours living in middle America during this period.

 

Quindlen is such a fine writer I was immediately drawn in. Her gift is that she makes the reader feel like they know, have known, or know someone just like her characters. Her prose is so seamless you don't realize you're reading a book - more like experiencing it.

 

Unlike some of Quindlen's work that can leave you with PTSD (Every Last One, One True Thing, Black and Blue) nothing really dramatic happens in Miller's Valley. There's regular love, life and death but it's not agonizing, unimaginably violent or pathologically cruel. It's just your run of the mill stuff - strokes, abortions, infidelity, drug abuse - but it's balanced with love and real caring.

 

Sound boring? It's not. Every time I sat down to read it was like catching up with a friend.

 

I had no idea how Miller's Valley would end and apparently neither did the author, because what she implies in the last few pages is incongruous to the story that has come before. I simply could not believe it.

 

Despite the rather bizarre ending, Miller's Valley is a satisfying and entertaining read.

 

 

Avvincente seguito di "Ayla figlia della terra", ne riprende le atmosfere esotiche ed affascinanti dell'Europa preistorica.

In questo secondo volume, Ayla, ragazza Cro-Magnon che ha vissuto tutta la sua vita insieme a dei Neanderthal, si ritrova completamente sola a causa di una maledizione scagliatale dal capo del Clan.

Inizia un viaggio alla ricerca degli Altri, cioè gli uomini della propria stessa razza, che desidera incontrare ma al tempo stesso teme.

Trovata una valle accogliente, si sistema così bene e trova un tale equilibrio perfetto, grazie anche alla compagnia di alcuni animali che, istintivamente, addestra, che rimanda di in anno in anno la partenza.

Incontrerà alla fine un uomo in fin di vita, che lei non può non provare a salvare, in quanto donna-medicina. Quest'uomo le insegnerà molte cose, ed altrettante ne imparerà lui stesso.

Per la prima volta in vita sua, Ayla non si sentirà diversa né sola, e con lui inizierà un nuovo viaggio.

Affascinante e piacevolissimo, il romanzo risulta interessante anche perché vengono affrontate le problematiche e difficoltà quotidiane della vita in mezzo alla natura (il fuoco, la caccia, etc.) mentre tende ad essere un po' stucchevole quando si tratta del rapporto tra i due giovani.

Viene voglia di leggere il successivo volume!

Grazie alla magia di Cornelia la valle sta guarendo, e pure i suoi abitanti. Eppure qualcosa sta uccidendo gli alti Ordini e prendendo il loro posto e nel frattempo sono apparsi dei piccoli draghi neri che rubando l'energia agli sventurati esseri viventi che gli capitano a tiro.
Toccherà anche questa volta a Cornelia ed i suoi amici guardiani a risolvere l'enigma del tessitore, guidata dal Groviglio verso un misterioso labirinto d'argento.

Questo libro è il secondo della trilogia delle Cronache della Valle Nascosta, seguito di Oltre la Frontiera.

Una storia che adoro e non vedo l'ora di continuare.
