Ravenwood by Margaux Gillis
Ravenwood - Margaux Gillis

*Victorian Gothic Paranormal Romance*

Written in a Brontë/Austen style, this novel delivers a blend of Gothic mystery and romance. The heroine, Elinore, sets out for the estate of Ravenwood which is to be her new home. The carriage is besieged and she and her driver are stranded. As she seeks help, she's bitten by a wolf in the forest. Problems and romance ensue.

I loved the strong female heroine in this story! I loved her romantic interest, Caleb. I loved pretty much everything about this novel. Gillis has perfectly blended my favorite literary genres and created something that is modern but feels like it's been around since Jane Eyre was published. I'm all in if this continues as a series!

This House is Haunted by John Boyne, narrated by Alison Larkin
This House Is Haunted - John Boyne,Alison Larkin

This was a haunted house story so Dickensian in style, Dickens himself is a catalyst within. I listened to the audio version, narrated by Alison Larkin.

I enjoyed this story of Eliza Caine attempting to fulfill her position as governess to two children, in a house almost falling down due to disrepair. How she got there and her attempt to keep the children safe I will leave for you to discover.

I liked the style of the storytelling and I enjoyed the character of Eliza, though at times she seemed too wily and too naive-both at once. Where the story lost me was at the very end, which is usually where these types of books fall apart, in my opinion. In this case I didn't mind it because I enjoyed the journey towards the end so much.

The narrator, Alison Larkin, is new to me, but I loved her performance! She brought the characters alive and I will actively seek out more of her audio narrations in the future.

Overall, this was a decent haunted house story and I recommend it to fans of such.

Reading progress update: I've listened to 44% of This House is Haunted and...
This House Is Haunted - John Boyne,Alison Larkin

I'm wondering why people, when they are being urged by disembodied voices saying "Get Out" or when they're being pushed by unseen hands towards a window that was violently opened by the same, why, oh why people, do you not LEAVE? Just LEAVE! That's it!

You remember what happened to this couple, right? For the love of all that is holy, RUN AWAY! That is all.

Dracula's Guest by Bram Stoker
Dracula's Guest and Other Weird Stories - Bram Stoker

I thought this collection was just okay. I enjoyed the story "The Judge's House" the most.

A good rat story is always fun.

I was a bit disappointed in this collection. I'm a big fan of Dracula and I guess I just expected more.

To be fair in the beginning it does state that these stories were published by Mrs. Stoker after the death of her husband, Bram According to her, he most likely would have gone over these stories again before seeking to have them published.

Suggested reading: The Dark Victorian, Risen
The Dark Victorian: Risen Volume One - Elizabeth Watasin

The ghost of a kindly Quaker, and a very cheeky skull with a top hat, fight supernatural crimes in London, 1880, during a curious murder spree perpetrated by the illegally reanimated dead.

How could you anyone resist a premise like that?

The Dark Victorian, Risen by Elizabeth Watasin tells a wonderfully gothic, gritty, and intriguing story, full of real-world Victorian values, thrilling dangers, deep mysteries, and otherworldly adventure.

Artifice the ghost, and Jim Dastard the skull, are agents of the mysterious "Prince Albert's Secret Commission."  Both of our heroes were executed for the crimes of their previous life.  Now they have both been brought back to half-life and put into the service of the state.  But while they have no conscious memory of their previous incarnation, some things of Artifice's past are seeping out of the shadows now to haunt her...  Meanwhile, there's a necromancer running around, raising dead children and sending them out to kill their parents.

Mysteries abound in the shadows of these cold, fogy, London streets.  If you're in the mood for something chilling, thrilling, and unique, then give this brilliant novella a try!  You can even read a sample of  it on Goodreads, right now!

This novella is available on Amazon.com in paperback and eBook.
