A Stone's Throw

Widowed librarian Alicia Fairmont needs answers…
After her husband is killed in a hit and run accident, Alicia travels upstate to his hometown of Cobble Cove, New York, hoping to locate his estranged family and shed light on his mysterious past. Anticipating staying only a weekend, her visit is extended when she accepts a job at the town’s library.
Secrets stretch decades into the past… Assisted by handsome newspaper publisher and aspiring novelist, John McKinney, Alicia discovers a connection between her absent in-laws and a secret John’s father has kept for over sixty years. But her investigation is interrupted when she receives word her house has burned and arson is suspected, sending her rushing back to Long Island, accompanied by John.
Back in Cobble Cove, cryptic clues are uncovered…
When Alicia returns, she finds a strange diary, confiscated letters, and a digital audio device containing a recording made the day her husband was killed. Anonymous notes warn Alicia to leave town, but she can’t turn her back on the mystery—or her attraction to John. As the pieces begin to fall into place, evidence points to John’s involvement in her husband’s accident.
The past and present threaten to collide, and Alicia confronts her fears… Has she fallen in love with her husband’s killer?

Between A Rock and a Hard Place

Librarian Alicia McKinney has put the past behind her…
Two years ago, Alicia discovered both a terrible truth and lasting love with John McKinney in the small town of Cobble Cove, New York. Now a busy mother of twin babies and co-author of a mystery series, Alicia couldn’t be happier.
Alicia’s contentment and safety are challenged…
Walking home alone from the library, Alicia senses someone following her, and on more than one occasion, she believes she is being watched. Does she have a stalker? When the local gift shop is burglarized, the troubling event causes unrest among Alicia and the residents of the quiet town.
John and Alicia receive an offer they can’t refuse…
When John’s sister offers to babysit while she and John take a much-needed vacation in New York City, Alicia is reluctant to leave her children because of the disturbances in Cobble Cove. John assures her the town is safe in the hands of Sheriff-elect Ramsay. Although Alicia’s experience with and dislike of the former Long Island detective don’t alleviate her concern, she and John take their trip.
Alicia faces her worst nightmare…
The McKinneys’ vacation is cut short when they learn their babies have been kidnapped and John’s sister shot. Alicia and John’s situation puts them between a rock and a hard place when the main suspect is found dead before the ransom is paid. In order to save their children, the McKinneys race against the clock to solve a mystery more puzzling than those found in their own books. Can they do it before time runs out?

Victoria Zagar – Written In Stone
Written In Stone (New World Rising) (Volume 1) - Victoria Zagar

Reviewer: Richard

Genre: M/M Dystopian Political Thriller

Review:
This title is the first in the series: New World Rising. The New World Rising is a companion series to Culture Wars.

I was impressed with the author skill in creating a view point of a time in the future with the same issues we face today. In many respects time seemed to stand still for 200 years. A vastly degraded educational system, decades old economic malaise and a continuing battle for the soul of the country has broke up the former United States into its constituent parts.

The focus of this book is the gubernatorial election in Florida which pits the force against each other. The political divide is well developed. Neither candidate is without flaws. The political tension reaches a fever pitch when the conservative candidate publicly comes out of the closet, faces an assassination attempt by his supporters and a liberal candidate who is ultimately elected resigns from office. The replacement conservative candidate upon being told he is being cast adrift by the party

This book is fast paced, well written and left me wanting to read more. So much so, that I will be reading the Culture War titles and reviewing

Written in Stone - C.I. Black

Very good considering the length. I thought there were still plenty of issues still unresolved at the end. I know there are 2 more in this series (around 100 pages each in length) that I hope tie up the lose ends. This would have been so much better (IMO) as a full length novel. The concept is a good one. Think similar to Grimm (TV show). Many supernaturals (Kin) living among us and we are none the wiser. Morgan is a bounty hunter who comes into her power the night she is attacked and defends herself. She finds out she is a Gorgon (like Medusa). Different, right?! Bought the next 2.

Written in Stone (Books by the Bay Mystery #4)
Written in Stone - Ellery Adams

A good read, one that was better than the book before it, which was better than it's predecessor.  The characters in this series have become more real and more likeable, especially the main character, Olivia.

The mystery in this story was interesting, layered, and complex. Instead of a plot with a lot of suspects, this was a plot where there was no obviously viable suspect, making the unfolding of the story even more intriguing. The ending illuminated a motivation it was hard not to pity and be repulsed by at the same time.

A solid cozy mystery series I'd recommend to anyone looking for depth in their cozies - you'll not find humour or comedy in these books, but you will find well thought out plots and considered writing with complex characters.

Written in Stone: Evolution, the Fossil Record, and Our Place in Nature
Written in Stone: Evolution, the Fossil Record, and Our Place in Nature - Brian Switek Well, that was a pleasant read, even if little of it was new to me. The chatty style was okay, though going through a lot of topics quite quickly. I particularly liked the last three chapters: the one on horses using that as a way to talk about ideas of pattern and process in evolution; an overview of changing thoughts about human origins; and a nicely-written conclusion about "our place in nature".
