This manual was written to enhance the teaching skills ofsecondary mathematics teachers of African American urban students.  This manual provides information about thehistory, background, and culture of this population of students; informationthat is not ordinarily provided in traditional training programs andprofessional development workshops.   New teachers to the African American urban community oftenexperience culture shock when they do not take the time to learn about theculture of their school, the neighborhood, families, and students they willteach.  This manual provides a briefguide to beginning this process.  Inaddition, it offers resources for teachers to further research this topic. This manual is useful for Urban Education, Math Education,Secondary Education, and Educational Leadership courses.
