I didn't connect with or just didn't get this book. There was a lot of unfamiliar name-dropping and I felt like allusions or something were just going right over my head. It may be great, but evidently not for me.

The novel is incredibly well researched and the prose is superb. That being said, the plot is a bit meandering. Plus, I had trouble being emotionally engaged with any of the characters. So what could have been a great or fantastic book is merely quite good.

I don't even want to give it stars. Could be one of those books I picked up at the wrong time. I've read and enjoyed Chabon and this doesn't seem to stray from his style or quality. It just became a chore after the first couple dozen pages.I am a failure.

There is a New Yorker cartoon that I especially like. A man is shown tied to a chair in an empty room. A woman is pouring gasoline on the floor with the apparent goal of lighting it and setting the room and the man on fire. She is saying, "Look! It's me, not you! OK?"That is how I feel when I read M...
