Georgette Heyer's first novel is silly melodrama, but I enjoyed reading it anyway. I could see glimpses of the author she would become. But the values and priorities of the time were seriously messed up!
This was the first novel by Heyer, and also it had its share of problems, it read very well, showing the hand of the future master of the romance genre. The novel is set not during Regency – that period will be introduced into Heyer’s fiction later – but vaguely in the middle of the 18th century. Tr...
My dear Mrs. Girraffee introduced me to this author. This is not one i was able to finish. I have enjoyed all the other books by this author. I intend to try again to read this book.
When he was young, Jack Carstares took the blame when his younger brother was caught cheating at cards. He was ostracized from society and fled to the Continent, where he eventually made his fortune gambling and teaching fencing. Now he has returned to England, where he plays at being a highwayman...

Plot completely out of wack. Characters...don't ask.You might think this is Jack and Diana's story. You'd ...
Well, you can definitely tell that it was her earliest. Much more juvenile and cliche. The villain? Much too romanticized. The man carried her off against her will to marry him against her consent. Not romantic. Not proof that he loves her. Exactly the opposite. And even the estranged brothers bit w...
I'm kinda surprised by the criticism, honestly. It's a fun little novel, very light, not much substance but an entertaining read. It also has a lot more action that I generally associate with Heyer's work. It was Heyer's first novel and for anyone that's read any of her other work that's pretty obvi...
This is a fun romp with Dukes, Earls, Ladies, damsels in distress, card cheats, highwaymen, duels, sword fights and true love. It also has wonderful characters, wit, humour, adventures aplenty and is thoroughly enjoyable.
