General Simon Bolivar, “the Liberator” of five South American countries, takes a last melancholy journey down the Magdalena River, revisiting cities along its shores, and reliving the triumphs, passions, and betrayals of his life. Infinitely charming, prodigiously successful in love, war and politics, he still dances with such enthusiasm and skill that his witnesses cannot believe he is ill. Aflame with memories of the power that he commanded and the dream of continental unity that eluded him, he is a moving exemplar of how much can be won—and lost—in a life.

4.0 Review
This is a fictional account of the last few days of Simon Bolivar's life. It reads very much as a work by Garcia Marquez and has his typical concerns and stylistic conventions. Bolivar is seen as a metaphor for Latin American history. His life began in glory, but ended in failure and his life ref...

3.0 The General in His Labyrinth
Written beautifully, as you would expect from Marquez, but neither the story or the characters were very engaging. This is at the bottom of my list of Marquez's books.

3.5 Generał w labiryncie
Generał w labiryncie to powieść przedstawiająca generała Simona Bolivara u schyłku swojego życia. Marquez zestawia ze sobą dwa obrazy tego samego człowieka - obecny: wyniszczonego, zmęczonego ciągłą walką o swoje ideały, ciężko chorego, bez realnej władzy i dawny, ukazany w licznych retrospektywnych...
