I really don’t know where to begin with this novella. It’s a very thought provoking read but I’m just not sure I enjoyed it. I will say, I do think it’s probably one of John Scalzi’s better works, but I also don’t think that fans of his novels would enjoy it. I also can’t decide between three or fo...

Different from Scalzi's usual. For example, there are a few adverbs. Science fiction served by fantasy devices. Enjoyably frightening.

This short novella has a lot going for it. It is definitely a space opera, but the twist has a very delicious flavor and I find myself hoping that Mr. Scalzi would continue in this universe. Apparently Scalzi's first attempt at a fantasy novel. It still feels a bit sf--the characters fly in spaceships to distant worlds. But the spaceships are powered by the torture of gods. Generations ago, the One True God rose to power. Ever since, the remaining gods have been enslaved by the True...

A really shiny idea and world, but I couldn't stand the prose and didn't care about any of the characters--in short, aside from the core concept, I hated most everything else about it. It deeply disappointed (though I liked the events in the ending), sigh, because I was hoping for so much more.
