Bilbo Baggins is the hobbit of the title: a short, round, and hairy-footed creature fond of small comforts and his rural home. What he doesn't like (or at least thinks he doesn't like) is adventure, but that's just what he gets when a wizard and several dwarves show up on his doorstep, eat him out of house and home, and induce him to join them on a perilous quest to steal a dragon's treasure. Along the way, he picks up a golden ring with the power to turn the wearer invisible; this ring will turn out to be central to the later volumes. While THE LORD OF THE RINGS is a serious epic about the nature of good and evil, written in highly formal language and intended for adults, this earlier work is considerably lighter in tone and clearly directed toward a younger audience, having sprung out of the stories that Tolkien used to tell his own children.

The Hobbit has always been one of those books I've always thought I should read. I've been wanting to get into Tolkien's work for a long time before I caved and finally bought The Hobbit on the Kindle store. I should have gotten a paper copy. This is something I don't think about a lot or rather, I ...

"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit." So begins one of the most famous tales in all literature, beloved by children and adults since first published in 1937. The most delightful illustration of Jemima Catlin enhances this particular edition (2013) of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins throu...
With the many fantasy books on the market these days, it is easy to forget where it all started. Reading Tolkien for me is like going home. The Hobbit was one of the first fantasy stories I read, so it may have an unfair advantage on my sensibilities. But I believe the characters, the action, the de...
I made all the teachers laugh in the prep room. I said I had 4000 kindle books, and I couldn't find anything to read. See, I wanted to read this. Thankfully, when Jackson released the Hobbit movies, this kindle version was on sale for under $2. I figured why not. I don't usually double buy unless y...
