Didn't love it, didn't hate it. Enjoyed it well enough, I suppose. This series of books is the basis for the British television series Wire in the Blood. This book in particular is the basis for the first two episodes of the show. If you've seen the show, you know a bit about what to expect in the bo...

Series: Tony Hill & Carol Jordan #1 So this was weird. Definitely weird. I was interested enough to keep reading and I did like part of the ending, but there was definite weirdness going on. I mean, the phone calls...? And the people warning me about the gruesomeness really weren't kidding. Over...

Meh. Written in 1995, this actually reads dated. Also, there is a lot of explaining things - mostly Hill explaining to Jordan - which read a bit like a lecture. Not a fan of the gory / torture parts, and it did not help that the book starts with some pretty gruesome descriptions.

Hot damn do I love Val McDermid's books. If "The Skeleton Road" gave me a donkey kick in the feels, then this one makes me wanna binge-read all the Tony Hill and Carol Jordan books I can get my grubby little hands on. (Though I'd like to back-track and read the books preceding "The Skeleton Road."...

This was a fresh take on a tired format, and I really enjoyed it. This novel is the first in a series featuring Detective Inspector Carol Jordan and psychologist Dr. Tony Hill, written in the 90's. It doesn't however suffer from being written some time ago; if I hadn't known before, I doubt I woul...

I hate SERIAL KILLERs. I don’t like them. I can tolerate every kind of killers, but serial killers never sit well with me. Because when a novel is based on a serial killer and his/her antics the book develops a tendency of introducing a suspect in the last chapters and then promptly setting the clue...

So with great anticipation I set off on my re-read of all Val McDermids novels and I began with “The Mermaids Singing” the first in the series featuring Tony Hill and Carol Jordan. In Bradfield the bodies of four men have been discovered…with the police reluctant to link them Dr Tony Hill is already ...

Interesting serial killer story. Tony Hill is a psychologist working for the home office and being brought into a serial killer mystery. Along with Detective Inspector Carol Jordan they race to find the killer. It's gruesome but I did enjoy it. It kept me wondering throughout what was happening ...

I liked it with one caveat. I found the descriptions of the killer's treatment of the victims a bit too much to handle. I actually ended up skipping over some of them because they disturbed me so much. Apart from that, I really enjoyed the mystery and the interplay of the characters. I really liked ...
