This is a lively and intriguing fantasy with orphaned girls, magic mirrors, mermaids and winged lions in a fantastical version of Venice under siege.
Neat premise (Venice! Mermaids! A girl with mirrors for eyes!) and interesting characters. Only complaint was that nothing he sets up gets resolved in this book; clearly there are sequels, but it was kind of a let-down for this to be all set-up and no release.
