That reminds me Kate....I hate when people read books KNOWING they're going to hate them....like they're doing it to prove a point or to prove it's bad. >_< UGH. So many things about Goodreads makes me upset...
Well, I have many, many genre rants, but I'll save them for another day when I haven't had 5 glasses of wine. But I don't like the weird fandom/friends thing with authors that if I just happen to have honest discussion with my friends, people flip out. I love me some Mary Calmes and most of my friends hate her books. I dislike Harper Fox books and many of my friends love her books. I've never gotten into a fight with any of them about this, so I don't see why people get all upset.

I wasn't planning to ;) But yes, I thought so already. Plus it's so very long :)

I don't like the fandom/friend thing with authors either...or the bragging that goes with it. But...to be honest, I don't consider a lot of these writers to be professional authors so I'm not too surprised it happens...I think it's weird that there's so much crossover between the author's real lives and fans...Like boundaries are being stepped on and there's no separation between reader ,reviewer, and the author....No matter how much I admire a writer I don't think I could ever go there....It makes me uncomfortable to think about. I live a few miles from my biggest author crush and I won't dare even to send legitimate fanmail on Goodreads because I feel that personal interaction in THIS genre is too much and implies too many things.....

"But the ones who read a book because their friends "made them do it" and whine the whole way through dragging their feet like pouting kids are pretty irritating."

THAT is exactly what I mean!!!! UGH.

Until a while ago I wouldn't have believed anyone would do that either. But it happens. I gave 1* to a book without reading it, and I stated that in the review. I also stated why I wouldn't read (it would brutally squick me, to the point of possibly triggering a depression and who wants that?), but I took the liberty of still rating it down for the exploitation of real victims and really killed people it signifies to me. I also was one of very few who rated it low. I didn't even downrate without proper info, I had a friend read the story instead and report back to me. I read the blue-print story this one was based on, only that the blue-print takes place in a dystopian future rather than the actual past. But since that and my defense of my 1* review... And the gall to tell me I have no integrity. If I had no integrity I'd have NOT reviewed it with what I consider an honest opinion or maybe even oohd and aahd along with the rest of them.

I hope I didn't whine too much through "Remastering Jerna" ;)
RE this whole conversation:

I'll admit...and feel free to flog me for saying so :p that this is part of the reason I found the "censorship" drama was so ridiculous in M/M....when you treat authors like celebrities and close friends, of COURSE they are going to feel like they can mosey into reviews and respond!! They've been treated like valued friends and special snowflakes by 90% of people!! Their heads have been gassed full of air and they're floating in the atmosphere believing they're so much better than they really are...And I'll come right out and say it....I'm tired of seeing people who have been guilty of bad behavior or SUPPORTING bad behavior rallying against the censorship cause....

Kate, I am a Scarlett Blackwell minion. You know that. Do I need to get my pistol out too? I am a pacifist here :-)
Heh. Who is Scarlet Blackwell?

Come on Kate, explain it to her. Let me grab some popcorns and read your rant about Ms. Blackwell *grin*.
Need help?
