I joined this site but I'm unsure if I'm going to do anything with it. I currently don't have any books on my profile. I just added and removed a few to play around and see how the site was set up. Currently the way things stand they have some things that GoodReads had that I didn't like. I did contact the staff with suggestions on how to improve them and I was told that they would consider my ideas and update as to whether or not the will be implemented. So at least they are showing they care more about what users want than GoodReads.
I was tempted to start building my bookshelves over there, but the database is so incomplete right now that they don't have a lot of my books at all, or if they have them, the cover I want isn't yet available. I'm very picky about my book covers and I could care less about what edition is displayed so long as it has the cover I want.
I know that they recently added librarian functions so I could sign up to become one and add book editions and covers and stuff, but all of that was such a pain in the ass over at GoodReads. I wish I could just upload whatever covers I want to use and have those be displayed for my books. Anyway it would just feel weird signing up to be a librarian to add/edit books for my own collection when the job sort of implies that you will be doing more than just tending to your own needs. On GoodReads I didn't give a damn and only made edits for my own needs but I'd feel bad about it on a new site. At least here on BL we can add new editions if we can't find what we are looking for in a search without having to sign up for special librarian status.
I guess I'm just going to keep an eye on that site and see how things progress before actually attempting to build my bookshelves over there. I prefer to do it manually as I really don't trust export/import functions and it takes a lot of time and energy to do it which is why I'd rather not jump in until I can see how the site develops.
