"I urge my weary feet onward, reluctant as they are to keep moving. I can feel sweat trickling down my neck and forehead. My back and legs cramp in protest, but I keep going... My eyelids grow as heavy as my feet."In J. S. Bailey’s second short story, a weary traveler journeys through a forest on her way to a distant town, but she runs out of water before she makes it to her destination. She knows that she will need to get a drink as soon as she can or she will become dehydrated and possibly die. An elegant old house she comes across at last seems like a refuge. The owner welcomes her in and offers her a bath and sustenance—but as the weary traveler soon learns, sometimes the things that are offered are not those that are received.

I read this story some time ago when it used to be on the author's website. I thought it was well written, but was saddened by the ending, and wished it ended differently.
