Wonderful review. I've thought about the appeal of aristocracy, and I think it has to do with the fact that in the UK, particularly, they were by custom forced to do nothing obviously useful. Consequently, they had heaps of time and found so many interesting ways to fill it. After the wars they mostly pursued useful tasks and became less enthralling, except for the very few closest to the throne. I hold a similar soft spot in my heart for Oxford Dons of old, and certain nuns and monks even farther back.
