I associate the Pinkertons with the penny dreadfuls, cheap lurid "true" stories about the Wild West. But I could be mixing up my history.

No I think you're right on target - though honestly I find it hard to tell what's reality and what's publicity. Especially since the Pinkertons themselves churned out a lot of that publicity themselves about their cases/adventures at the time. Makes it kind of hard to pick out what's history and what's the "made into a better story" part.
There's a lot of that to wade through in some cases. Though I recall reading one account (think it's in Skull in the Ashes) about how a Pinkerton agent working for the Iowa police tracked their man on an odyssey of a trek into the Alaskan Klondike in the 1890s.
