Wowzas! I can't remember a book that started out so delightful and deteriorated into such a mess of Imperialist racism and misogeny. The trouble starts when humans start appearing in the stories. Before that, the stylistic elements and amusing tales are wonderful.
This was such an interesting mix of fantasy, horror and mystery. So good. The main characters reminded me other famous trios from other authors (Lindgren, Riordan, Rowling) and their relationships with each other made me laugh a lot. I adored George and loved Lucy, but Lockwood was too much of a dar...
Much that was predictable, several surprises, anyway, room for more if Stroud ever wants to write it. Much better for getting on with the over-arching story line. Perfect for my mood.
The ghost hunting in this series was getting a bit stale and all the hints and foreshadowings of a bigger picture without any apparent progress toward solving these deeper mysteries was getting tiresome, too, so it was very welcome when this volume propelled matters forward a long way. I don't know if this is the last book, but I actually hope that it isn't. I'm just smitten with everything about this! The characters are fabulous, the stories are just scary enough to be fascinating, and the plots are all amazing. This is the 5th book and it hasn't lost any steam. *happy sigh* ...
