Of the four Horrible Histories I've read so far, this one was the least ... enjoyable isn't the right word, cohesive? clear? well-written? I learned a lot, but I was pretty much starting at zero, and I'm left with the feeling that I didn't learn as much as I should. A lot of start of the book wa...

No one gets enough credit for inventing a good joke, but here we have evidence of half a dozen original but highly specific yakkers. One wishes there were more, but I have to agree with the stately drawing of Queen Victoria on endspiece: "We are amused."

What adults certainly miss is childhood credulity and curiosity. One without the other is like putting a bag on a plastic mind, although adults would seem to be in the credulity line.So...this book contains a few unbelievable "facts", which plausibly gain something by being controvertible. For all my travelling this summer, I'm not going to France, but it was a nice and interesting read anyway. It also made the perfect companion novel to Promise of Blood due to it's focus on the workings of revolutions and the guillotine. Like the other books in the series I've read so far, it's fil...

Anyways, as a fan, I thought I'd pick up this installment about the Victorians. True to its Horrible His...

Like Caligula, who loved his horse so bad, he promoted him to consul, and had a palace built for him, so he cou...

When visiting one of London's most loathsome places, The Tower of London, my sister and I came across this Horrible Histories book. As it happens we're big fans of the sketch show on the BBC - the type of fans that shamelessly sings all the songs while doing the dishes. This little booklet tells ...

Loved the hilarious This Is Your Life section. On a serious note, one has to be grateful for Dickens et al highlighting the plight of common people because Vicky didn't do other than 'voice'.Deary has the micturation taken because of his flippant and irreverent tone, yet he does get the youngsters f...
