The Nightmare Room by Chris Sorensen
The Nightmare Room - Chris Sorensen
The Nightmare Room lives up to its title. It is a slowly building creepfest fueled by nightmares for the first half then picks up speed in its later half.

Peter and Hannah need a new start after a devastating loss and move back to Peter’s hometown to help with his ailing parents and to heal themselves. They move into a property that Peter’s dad purchased that is huge, old and in disrepair. Hannah loves the idea of the old home but Peter’s not so sure.

"Hannah had gotten it wrong. This was not the sort of house featured on her home improvement show; this was every house in every horror movie he’d ever seen."

Despite his misgivings, Peter, who is an audiobook narrator, sets up his studio in the dark, dank basement and soon realizes that he may not be alone down there! Is it real or is he starting to lose his marbles?

I just loved some of the descriptions of the house. It makes me long for an old haunted house of my own.

". . . he was facing a narrow, grey door. A basement door. His vision had steadied and the room no longer moved about him. But the door… It’s breathing."

This is a decent little horror tale that has a lot of layers that reach far beyond the haunted house trappings. It deals with aging, grief and past regrets that come back to haunt. The main characters come across as real and imperfect and as a reader who needs decent characterization I really appreciated this. I did want to learn more about Peter’s birth mother because I’m nosy and have so many questions but perhaps that will happen in a prequel or sequel? I can only hope.

Creeping Fear
Lockwood & Co.: The Creeping Shadow - Jonathan Stroud

I adore this series. I always look forward to the newest book. And I have to get these on audiobook because the narration is always excellent. I was not disappointed. At the end of "The Hollow Boy", Lucy leaves Lockwood and Co for what seems like good reasons at the time. She becomes an independent contractor ghost hunter and she's good at her job. But she's not happy, even with her glass jar skull for company. She misses the camaraderie of Lockwood and Co.: George, even Holly, and of course, Lockwood. But she left to keep them safe because her newer abilities to communicate with ghosts might cause her to make a mistake and get one of her friends hurt.

Lockwood shows up at her new digs and asks for her help with a case, and she agrees to help them out. It's one of their tougher cases, and Lucy finds her life in jeopardy shortly after, and realizing that she's more safe sticking with Lockwood and Co. until they fi

gure out who's trying to kill her. That's when their biggest case comes their way, a whole haunted village. They end up in a small town with serious ghost problems a conspiracy that will shake the foundations of the ghost hunting community.

I love how Stroud steadily builds on the foundation of the last book and the previous ones. The story just expands beautifully and he doesn't leave any plot elements dangling. While he turns a few things on their heads, it's organic as the reader realizes that things weren't as the characters thought or believed. The characters are very well developed and layered. While the main characters are all teens, they have a maturity that is realistic considering the world they live in and the dangers they face every day. Let's face it. The children are the ones on the frontline, confronting and dealing with the ghost Problem.

These books are delightfully eerie and downright chilling at times. Also, there's plenty of human menace. I mean, grownups trying to kill kids. How sick is that? While the paranormal elements are integral to the story, the heart of it is the characters. Everything is told from Lucy's point of view (it's 1st person), but the characters don't suffer from being seen through the typically narrow 1st person vantage point. Instead, they are richly described, with dialogue and action that shows you everything you need to know about them. Lucy also grows as a character as she faces significant challenges and comes to realizations about what she is and how to deal with the troubles she and her friends face. And that they are stronger together.

As with the last book, this has a nice conclusion but it also leaves the door open for the next book. Things are about to get even more intense, and I'm here for it.

Another book I'd love to see made into movies. And I just checked and it's going to be optioned for a tv series in the UK. This pleases me. Sadly, the next book is the last book. But all good things come to an end.

Highly recommend!

13 Deja Vu: An Anthology of Horror and Dark Fiction
13 Deja Vu: An Anthology of Horror and D... 13 Deja Vu: An Anthology of Horror and Dark Fiction - Sara Schoen,Taylor Henderson,Erin Lee,Carissa Ann Lynch,Bradon Nave,Luke Swanson,Marissa Farrar,Jackie Sonnenberg,Elizabeth Roderick,Samie Sands,S. Valentine,D.A. Roach,Thomas S. Flowers Featuring Mytopia by Samie Sands

Mia is a young girl whom her mother has sheltered and tried to protect all her life. She just wants her little girl to be safe and not to get hurt. So that is probably why Mia has always kept to herself never letting anyone in resulting in her having no friends. You see Mia is blind and that is why her mother tries to keep her from harm.

When a virus starts to run wild in the outside world Mia’s mother who is a nurse tries to keep her from listening to the news but when she is called into work Mia desperate to know what is going turns the tv on as soon as her mother is out the door.

When her mother doesn’t return after a few days Mia gets worried but when she receives a phone call from her mother and then the line goes dead Mia has no clue what she should do. Should she go out to find for her mother not knowing what is happening? Should she go out into a world that is being over by a virus when she can’t see? Oh my oh my what will happen to Mia who is all alone?

I have enjoyed reading Mia’s story and would love to read more from her world. What is Mia and her mother’s story? Where is Mia’s mother? Is she safe? What happens to Mia?

Mytopia is the only story so far that I have read from the anthology of 13 Déjà vu (thanks to Samie Sands for the opportunity) I do plan on reading more at a later date. Mytopia is just the beginning and just enough to whet the appetite setting me up for more from this great set of short stories.

If you have not read 13 Déjà vu anthology then let me suggest that you do. What are you waiting for? Pick up your copy today.

Excerpt

Phoenix slams the door shut behind her and immediately turns around and barges toward me just so he can lock me in his arms and twirl me around.

“Yes! Viva Las Vegas, baby!” I yell, grinning like mad.

“You happy, princess?” he asks as he lowers me to the ground again, still holding me close.

“I love it …” I muse. “It’s exactly what I wanted. How I pictured us together.”

The lopsided smile on his face makes me lick my lips, and he grabs my chin and inches closer.

“C’mere, sweet cheeks.” He smashes his lips onto mine with full fervor, not sparing even a second to breathe. Every time he kisses me, I feel like I can live forever, and now that we have this house, the home of my dreams, together … it just feels like I can finally live my happy forever after.

“It’s a big home,” I murmur as our lips unlock.

“Maybe we should have a housewarming party,” he says, wriggling his eyebrows.

“Housewarming?” I frown. “We don’t have any f … Oh …” Finally, I get what he means.

He grins, and his tongue dips out to lick his lips as he growls. “Oh, yes, princess. Time to get the chains out.”

He kisses my chin and runs his tongue all the way down my neck, and I moan softly from his touch.

“Where do you want it, princess?” he whispers against my skin. “We can do it everywhere … in the kitchen. On the table. On the stairs. Or maybe against the wall.” He picks me up below the hips and pushes me up against the wall.

“We have all the time in the world,” I say. “Why not everywhere?”

“Good thinking.” He grins.

“Not a lot of furniture to use for fucking, though,” I add. “It’s still so empty.”

“We’ll go shopping tomorrow,” he growls, pressing his lips between my breasts.

“I don’t mean just that. I mean … this house … it has so many rooms. What will we do with them?”

“You wanna worry about that now?” he growls as he rips down his zipper. “While I’m on the verge of fucking your pussy raw?”

“I wanna know what you’re thinking,” I reply. “What we’re gonna do now that we finally have a place to call home.”

“What do you mean?” he says, stalling in the middle of pulling down his pants.

“I don’t know. I mean it’s an awfully big home to fill up with just the two of us.”

He tilts his head back, his eyebrows drawing together. “What are you saying, princess? Are you seriously thinking …”

“What?” I shrug.

“No …” Phoenix shakes his head.

“You don’t want …”

“Us? A baby?” He laughs, and with the face he’s making, he has me laughing too. “Stop making silly jokes, princess. You know we aren’t cut out for that shit. Next thing you know, someone’s calling us Mommy and Daddy. I’m not that old.”

Closing my eyes, I shake my head. “You’re right. I don’t even know why I thought of it.” Probably because people always say you should start a family before you can be happy. But who am I kidding? Me, a mother? That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.

“We’re together … on our own … and no one’s gonna tear us apart. I’d say that’s reason enough to celebrate.” He grins against my lips and his hands suddenly grip my hips, jerking down my pants. “Now … where were we?”
