Book Review: Transcendent (Denazen #4) By Jus Accardo
Transcendent - Jus Accardo

* I received an eARC of this novel via Netgalley. This has not influenced my review.

This is the book I've been waiting over 6 years for and it was oh so very worth it! If I thought the last book in this series was action-packed this one took it to a whole new level. Things were happening one right after the other! There were times where I found myself holding my breath and bracing for the worst. The writing carried this story so well! I went through so many ups and downs. This book made me a blubbering mess and I loved it SO much!

I don't even know what to say about the characters at this point. Dez and Kale are so good together but the world keeps dropping bombs on their precious relationship and their family. Considering they stood the test of time throughout this series I'm pretty sure they have a great future ahead of them.

Brandt stood out to me this time around. I adored the revelations by the almost end of the book. It all made sense! I was so happy and yet sad for the decisions that had to be made that involved Dez and Brandt, Kale and so many more.

Considering the open-ended ending I'd love to see Brandt continue with this series from his perspective. I'd also love to see an end to Denazen. Like, burn it down to the ground and dance on its ashes type of deal. I'd also love for a certain not-a-sister to die a permanent death. Though I have a feeling that if we get another book in this series she's probably going to play a big part as the bad guy because I really don't want to see her "reformed". Her rightful place is in a ditch because of everything she did or helped do to Kale and Dez.

My Favorite Quotes:

"The bond we had came along once every ten lifetimes."

"The truth didn't always set you free. Sometimes it made you a prisoner, chained to an idea that would never become a reality."

"Monsters weren't generally born. They were created."

Book Review: Tremble (Denazen #3) By Jus Accardo
Tremble - Jus Accardo

This series just keeps getting better and better as the books progress! This was the most action-packed book in the series so far. I was on the edge of my seat for 90% of it. There were very few moments where it felt safe to take a deep breath and know that things were going to be ok. The writing was also amazing where the overall pace of the story is concerned.

My heart broke for Dez with the ending of the last book. This book, however, started off with a bang. It was so good yet so heartwrenching! I liked how determined Dez was to get things back to how they were. I loved how she never gave up and fought for Kale despite the circumstances.

Kale just does not have much luck where this series is concerned. He's been dealt a bad hand in life with a sprinkling here and there of good. He'll never be the old Kale but maybe new Kale is going to be even better. My heart just breaks for the circumstances he's in.

I almost take back what I said about Alex. He was also dealt a terrible hand in this book and I kind of, sort of feel for him. It doesn't excuse what he's done and said in the past but now it's kind of a moot point.

The ending was mind-blowing considering I thought Ginger knew everything. Though I bet she knows but won't say because it'll affect things moving forward and she's learned her lesson due to someone in a past generation of hers. The revelation about Dez was also interesting and made total sense. Now I just need answers and for Kale and Dez and the rest of the sixes to have a chance at a better life.

My Favorite Quotes:

"He was sleeping beauty and I was the prince."

"Hope was a fragile and dangerous thing. It had the ability to build you up higher than the clouds - and then drop you."

"Whatever it was I did to steal your heart when we met, I'll do it again. I swear."

Book Review: Toxic (Denazen #2) By Jus Accardo
Toxic - Jus Accardo

This novel was frustrating but still very worth it and so very good! The writing was fantastic in keeping a steady pace all the way to the cliffhanger ending. I'm so glad the next book is already out!

Dez was what I found frustrating throughout this novel. She did something big that went against her character's basic mold and it made reading this novel anger-inducing. I understand the rationale behind it and she even calls herself out on it in the novel but I still can't get over my frustration.

Kale is so self-sacrificing, sweet and naive yet he can turn into an elite assassin in 5 seconds flat. So you win some and you lose some, I guess? I disliked how Kale glued himself to Jade but I understand his naive motivations even though I didn't want to see it.

Throughout this novel I wanted SO much to have someone knock some sense and/or teeth out of Alex. Hindsight is 20/20 and whatnot but he needs to understand that Dez has moved on and back off. He did get a little better by the end though.

This novel started out with a bang and ended in a bang. Both events were mindblowing and unexpected but made for an amazing story! I'll be skipping the Brandt short story for now and probably come back to it when I finish this series because I NEED to know what happens next and how things start going right again for Kale and Dez, pretty please?

My Favorite Quotes:

"Sometimes love is painful."

"Destiny is not something to toy with. Things are what they are."

"Knowing you'll be okay is worth anything I could possibly go through. Please remember that."

Book Review: Touch (Denazen #1) By Jus Accardo
Touch - Jus Accardo

Fourteen year old me is doing the happy dance right about now! A series she adores is finally getting a continuation! The re-read almost a decade later just went magnificently well! Things can only go up from here.

As mentioned above, this is a re-read almost ten years in the making. I'm SO excited for the fourth book in this series to finally be released! Before I can get to it I'm making a point to re-read the full series. It's proven to be just as amazing as I vaguely remembered it being!

Apparently, fourteen year old me was an adrenaline junkie with books because boy does this book/story keep things up in the air and then decides to pull the rug from under you while you're looking up. All the plot twists and the secrets being revealed made for one heck of a heart attack inducing book.

I like to think that maybe in a fantasy world I'd be Dez. She's cool, helps her friends when they need it and even puts herself in danger for the people she cares about. If that isn't a good kid then I don't know what is, though I should mention she parties like there's no tomorrow and likes to make her father angry with it. You can't get it all good with no bad, right?

Kale is so innocent and sweet! When you get to know a little of his background it is soul-crushing! How could someone treat this sweet and at the same time dangerous boy like that? No one deserves that treatment. I loved how Dez took him under her wing. I can't wait to re-remember how they grow both together and apart as people.

I thought I had a vague recollection that the ending was going to be sob inducing and I'm glad I was wrong. It was sweet and heart-pounding all at the same! I'm both excited and nervous about the next book because I know deep, deep down in my soul that the crap is going to hit the fan various times before it gets to the light at the end of the tunnel.

My Favorite Quotes:

"You're a human being, not a weapon. You don't belong to anyone."

"Every event in people's lives shape their future. You cannot change these things."

"I loved proving people wrong - especially myself. I thrived on it."

EXCERPT:

The rain stopped, and the wind outside had settled, leaving an uncomfortable silence in its wake. I didn’t have a problem with the quiet. I liked it, in fact. But this was something a little different. This was uncomfortable. The kind of stillness that came from forced proximity to someone or something that made your skin itch and your stomach roil. The kind of hush that usually set in right before a devastating storm or a natural disaster.

He did this sometimes. Just sat across from me and stared. He usually wouldn’t even say anything. I didn’t think he expected me to say anything, either. He just looked. Sometimes it lasted a few minutes, just long enough to send that chill skittering up and down my spine. Other times it would go on for hours. He’d blink and breathe and fidget, but his eyes…those remained locked on me, his unhealthy mix of sadness and lust and greed and anger crushing me to the point of breathlessness.

We were at it again, and I was just about out of patience. It was one thing to have been ripped away from my home, from my life, by that madwoman, Cora Anderson. It was another to have her poke and prod and use me as a science experiment. She’d altered my mind. Made me forget most of my life before the day I woke up a prisoner on the floor of her cold, dank cell. Those things were all bad, but having been “rescued” by this bastard and forced to stay by his side at all times? That was an entirely new level of torture.

“You’re thinking about him again, aren’t you?” His tone was acidic and his jaw tight. He had a temper, this guy. I’d seen it multiple times. He’d never done anything more than scream at me, but it was only a matter of time with people like this. I wasn’t sure how I knew that, but I felt it in my bones. Maybe I’d known someone like him at home. Maybe it was just intuition.

“Yes,” was all I replied. I found that simple, one-word responses went over the best. Or, more accurately, the worst. When I said too little, he grew agitated. He wanted me to talk to him, yet the things that came out of my mouth weren’t ever what he wanted to hear. I didn’t act like he’d hoped I would, didn’t say the things he longed to hear. Some days he was determined to change me. Others, he was rabid, blaming me for not behaving like myself and demanding that I wake up.

Forget that I had no idea who I was.

“While it’s not okay, I understand.” He offered me a smile—a small, tentative twitch of his lips and gentle shrug of his shoulders. He was making an effort to be kinder today, going out of his way to speak softer and move slower.

That made me even angrier.

“You understand? Then my life is complete. All I’ve ever wanted was the understanding of a serial killer.” Even if I hadn’t been thinking about…someone else, I would have lied. The fact that I wasn’t focused on him, and him alone, drove Dylan—my savior, my captor—crazy. But the truth was, I was thinking of him. That other him. How could I not? Even if I didn’t find myself missing him every moment of every day in an almost physical way, I wouldn’t be able to put him out of my mind because he was technically sitting here across from me.
