A CONNECTICUT YANKEE IN KING ARTHUR'S COURT by Mark Twain
A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court - Mark Twain

An 19th Century man travels back to Arthurian England of the 6th Century where he tries to bring them from a monarchy to a republic. He brings his knowledge and starts building a modern world.

It took me a while to get into the cadence and rhythm of Arthurian English. Once I do this becomes a rollicking good time. Watching The Boss deal with the superstitions of the time and trying to teach, which he eventually does with Arthur, was interesting. I enjoyed how he set up his own alternate society which he keeps secret from King Arthur and Merlin. But just like Camelot ends in war so does this story and The Boss loses everything he built.

This shows how a person is born in a time and a mind set and it is very difficult to change them, no matter how much life improves with the changes.

"AND THEY CALLED IT CAMELOT"
And They Called It Camelot: A Novel of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis - Stephanie Marie Thornton

In writing this review for "AND THEY CALLED IT CAMELOT", I readily confess my deep admiration and respect for President Kennedy and Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy (Onassis) over the past several decades.

The novel starts shortly after Jacqueline Bouvier has broken off her engagement to stockbroker John Husted and is introduced - through a friend at a party - to a young Congressman from Massachusetts who has his sights set on running for the Senate in 1952 against a popular Republican incumbent. The name of the Congressman: John Fitzgerald Kennedy. The novel -- as largely told by Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis herself --- takes the reader through the subsequent 2 decades of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis' life.

One of the best selling points of this novel is that the pace never slackens and is largely faithful to what is historically verifiable about Jackie Kennedy Onassis' life. But I must admit to a literary device the author used in the novel that caused me to raise my eyebrows a bit. I won't say what it is, except to say that it did not interrupt the overall flow of the novel.

Stephanie Marie Thornton has written a first-rate novel. She deserves all the praises she has earned for it.

Review: The Guinevere Deception (Camelot Rising #1) by Kiersten White
The Guinevere Deception - Kiersten White

From New York Times bestselling author Kiersten White comes a new fantasy series reimagining the Arthurian legend, set in the magical world of Camelot.

There was nothing in the world as magical and terrifying as a girl.

Princess Guinevere has come to Camelot to wed a stranger: the charismatic King Arthur. With magic clawing at the kingdom's borders, the great wizard Merlin conjured a solution--send in Guinevere to be Arthur's wife . . . and his protector from those who want to see the young king's idyllic city fail. The catch? Guinevere's real name--and her true identity--is a secret. She is a changeling, a girl who has given up everything to protect Camelot.

To keep Arthur safe, Guinevere must navigate a court in which the old--including Arthur's own family--demand things continue as they have been, and the new--those drawn by the dream of Camelot--fight for a better way to live. And always, in the green hearts of forests and the black depths of lakes, magic lies in wait to reclaim the land. Arthur's knights believe they are strong enough to face any threat, but Guinevere knows it will take more than swords to keep Camelot free.

Deadly jousts, duplicitous knights, and forbidden romances are nothing compared to the greatest threat of all: the girl with the long black hair, riding on horseback through the dark woods toward Arthur. Because when your whole existence is a lie, how can you trust even yourself?

I received a free copy from the publisher via Netgalley and chose to leave a voluntary review. Thank you!*

DNFed at 50%

I was super excited when I received this book from Netgalley, sadly this book was not for me. I normally really like her books and her retellings but this was just fell short for me. It just didn’t hold my interest at all and I finally DNFed it at around 50%. For one it just felt like the story or Guinevere, who by the way bot really Guinevere (not a spoiler it states it right in the beginning) ll over the place, we bounce around a lot in the story.  It also was a bit on the slow site and it felt like never ending.

I also had a hard time connecting with the characters, Arthur who was not there a lot but mentioned and talked about I liked but again it was hard for me to connect to him if he is hardly there. Guinevere seemed lost herself and all over the place with no real direction so I had a even harder time to connect to her.

Of course there were another people but most just were meh….. I had some thoughts about what is about to come and will be a plot twist so I asked a friend who read it all how it ends and such. But I was not surprised and basically everything I thought would happen did happen.

Overall, meh book for me. I really wanted to like this book but I just couldn’t get into it this time around. I’m sure there will be plenty of people who will love it.

I rate it 2 ★

Release Day Review! The Lost King (A King's Tale #2) Leilani Love!

The call of Camelot was to much for him to resist.

All Arthur had to do was sell his furs and go home and settle down with one of the neighboring farmers daughters. But when he falls at the feet of the Princess Guinevere his world gets turned upside down.

Promised to Prince Gregory the crowned Prince of Camelot, Guinevere has resigned herself to a loveless marriage. Brought up to put her people her first she does everything she can to protect them. When a hunter falls at her feet he tempts her in ways no one ever has before him.

Will the two be able to fight their attraction or will fate intervene?

All he wanted to do was sell his furs and go home, but the call of Camelot was too much for him to resist in this thrilling new book in the King’s Tale series. Arthur, Lancelot and Guinevere are strong, compelling characters that easily draw readers into the story and then refuse to let go. The characters are the stuff legends are made of as they live an adventure that holds readers in its grasp with lots of thrilling suspense and a sense of expectation. The romance blossoming between Arthur and Guinevere is sweet but it is so not a good idea, so the relationship is quite adventurous on its own with lots of sizzling chemistry that has sparks flying. Guinevere is a heroine that readers can really sink their teeth into and Arthur is full of that bad boy attitude that breaks hearts and readers can’t help but lose their hearts to them both when secrets are revealed and their respective situations kind of flip flop from one to other.

The fast paced and smooth flowing plot has an air of adventure and mystery that keeps readers glued to the pages as the danger they face escalates and Merlin’s entry into the story starts the ball rolling adding even more excitement. The author paints such vivid imagery with her story telling that readers can easily imagine the time, the magic, the adventure and the romance of this spellbinding King’s Tale.

Erudition: "The Last Defender of Camelot" by Roger Zelazny
The Last Defender of Camelot - Roger Zelazny,Robert Silverberg

(Original Review, 1980-12-12)

"The Last Defender of Camelot" is not really a new Zelazny book, but is a collection of short stories and novelettes from the very beginning of his career til now. I didn't much care for the title story (Merlin, not Lancelot was always my favorite Arthurian character), but they're all worth reading unless you have them in other collections.

If you're into stuff like this, you can read the full review.
