I wonder if I would have had a different reaction to this book if I'd read it as a kid. While I didn't enjoy the book as a whole (especially the weird hand-wavy references to "Indians" and the 10,000 uses of the word coon), the depiction of grief at the end was very good and did make me cry.

I would use this book in a 6th grade class. It would be a good book to practice foreshadowing.

This is at least my third reading of this classic. I thought it would be fun to do the Audible version as the narrator is wonderful. Silly me... I actually had high hopes that listening would make it easier to get through... it wasn't. And I'm glad.

This is a great book to help the students learn that if your heart is set on something they your wishes can be granted.

I feel very biased about this book. It is definitely very well written. I also liked the boy's spirit and his great will. But I just cannot approve of a book that encourages children to hunt and to hunt in a big way. Billy doesn't just occasionally hunt but is absolutely obsessed with it. He even cu...

One of the worst book I've ever read. And this is a child's book? I know that there are some children's books that need to be read as a child; as a grown up is just not the same. But this book is definetely not a children's book. To name some things I hated: Billy, the main character, was not only...
