Language and love collide in this inventive novel of a young Chinese woman's journey to the West and her attempts to understand the language, and the man, she adores.Zhuang – or “Z,” to tongue-tied foreigners – has come to London to study English, but finds herself adrift, trapped in a cycle of cult...

I completely identified with this book. It brilliantly captures the feeling of immersing yourself in a foreign language and culture. What happens when you begin to fluently speak, live and love in another language is fascinating. The author manages to convey so very well, how the beliefs impregna...

This book was recommended to me from a good friend, and it turns out it is a really good book. I enjoyed reading this book. At first I was sure that I would find the writing style annoying, but the fact that it develops along with Z's English made it fun to read. The ending of this book was a bit vague but still an enjoyable read.

My step-mother gave it to my sister for Xmas, but she had already read it, so she gave it to me. She says that she loved it though and it like changed her life, and she actually skipped class to read it. It's fun reading books that mean a lot to other people.Twenty-three year old Z, of the unpronoun...

Both funny and poignant, this novel uses a word and definition to open each chapter of the narrator's diary or notebook. A student from China in England, she writes in English, which improves over time, as does her ability to express more complex and nuanced ideas and emotions. At times it's hilario...

I loved this short little book. At the start there stands the words: "Nothing in this book is true, except for the love between her and him." The depiction of her, Ms Z's, love for him is so true that the book truly shines. This is reason enough to read the book. In addition how it feels to struggle...
