Twelve-year-old Leif suffers from terminal cancer and has been getting weaker every day. He decides to climb a tree fort one more time before it's too late.

After a flash of light startles him, he falls out of the tree, but is saved by the most unusual person he's ever met: a wood sprite named Timber.

Timber is on a quest. He was sent by the Seven Sages to recruit Leif. They must rescue the Queen of the Folk, who has been imprisoned by the Mage. The folk are cursed - they have no courage, and are powerless against the Mage's dark magic; only another Hume, like Leif, has any hope to get past the Mage's defenses.

Feeling stronger now that he has a purpose, Leif accepts and heads off with Timber through the Five True Lands.

Leif doesn't know what he's signed up for... The secret the Mage has been keeping could mean his life.
