the tone is too high-handed&a tad preachy. i couldn't like any of the character. i think rendell also pushing it too hard for illiteracy being the main cause of the murder.

From the first sentence, Rendell tells what happened to the Coverdale family and why and then proceeds to show how the tragedy inevitably came about. Always listed as one of the top mysteries, and I totally agree.
