Although author James Frey initially rebutted those charges, saying his book conveyed the "essential truth" of his battles with addiction, he later admitted on a January 26, 2006, Oprah broadcast that most of the charges leveled against him were "pretty accurate" and claimed he made up his bad-guy persona as a "coping mechanism."
