I got exactly what I expected from this book: A quick, easy read with plenty of humor and an inventive story. It’s full of famous fictional mystery and horror characters, from “the Great Detective” to “the Count”, with Jack the Ripper as the main protagonist. But the fun comes from the book's POV, w...

The game is afoot. Choose a side. Collect the bones and gather the magic items. The game will come to end on Halloween night. Wow. I have no idea how Zelazny pulled this one off. A contest involving iconic horror legends and their pets, told from the point of view of Jack the Rippers dog Snuff. Wha...

Goodness gracious, I am super late writing this review. My schedule just exploded after the middle of October, and I had no time. Because it's been nearly a month, I don't have the best memory of all the plotlines. But I promised I would write a review for every book I read, so better late than neve...

There aren't a lot of books that I would call both macabre and good-hearted; as a matter of fact, I can think of only one: This one. With a dry wit that never attempts to talk over your head, genuine ghoulishness, this loving tribute to the works of all the great horror master, and in particular H.P...

This is an odd book, even for Zelazny. I like the illustrations in every chapter, and also the spareness of the prose. (By this time in his career Zelazny was an old hand at "tell only what you have to in order to get the job done," and it shows.) Additionally, if you're looking for an unusual ...

I started reading this book for a group read, there are 31 chapters and the goal was one chapter per day ending on Halloween but I couldn't restrain myself and just had to keep reading. On first inspection the cover looks like a children's book but don't be mislead, the writing goes a lot deeper the...

Zelazny is a genius... although I have a sneaking suspicion his genius may be drug related. Where else would you come up with the idea of telling a Victorian mystery-humor-horror story from the point of view of a dog?The first clue of the kind of upcoming weirdness comes from the dedication, which i...

I read this many years ago when it first came out, and just reread it. I'd forgotten how enjoyable this one was, and unique even among Zelazny's works. One of my favourites from one of my most favourite authors. Lots of fun, very creative, and highly recommended.

This was my second attempt at reading Zelazny, and although I enjoyed this one more than the last one, I am beginning to think that Zelazny's style just doesn't agree with me. The best way that I can think to describe it is that I feel like I'm seeing the events of the story out of the corner of my ...
