My first book from Val McDermid and it didn't disappoint me. I had seen the series with Tony Hill, but this isn't one of those. I liked to see into one village so closed to strangers, I couldn't even believe there are actually places where people still live like that. I liked the plot, but sometime...
This book explores the investigation of the disappearance of a thirteen year old girl in the 1960s from a tiny village (hamlet?) in England. It’s kind of hard to describe without getting into spoilers. It’s probably safe to say that someone does go to trial despite the fact that they never find her ...
I'm sorry I didn't keep any comments from my original reading; I'd love to compare them. What I do know is that I liked the book even better, despite knowing the big twist. The greatest strength of the book is the earnest young detective doing his best to solve a heinous crime in 1963 without any pr...

I can't believe I am saying this, but I thought the movie did a much better job portraying the story....simply because of the flow. The movie wove past and present into the stor...
This was Val McDermid's first novel published. It is amazing and suspenseful. A real page-turner, it was hard to put down. But I would not call this her best. She has improved over time. Her later novels are riveting.
