Sally Lockheart has just lost her father to the perils of the sea, but the mystery surrounding his death is far more tempestuous. Left with nothing but a note in unfamiliar handwriting instructing her to ask a Mr. Marchbanks about something called "The Seven Blessings", Sally begins the quest to fin...

It was entertaining, the mystery was good and I think there wasn't a single boring moment... things are always happening (murders, kidnapping, etc). I liked that there were several murders, not only one. Made things darker and more dangerous for Sally and her allies. You can tell the book is YA when...

You know this smart and swiftly paced Victorian mystery is written for young adults, right? You know that doesn't mean dumbed down or raw, but rather that it should not be cluttered up with obtrusive literariness or head-scratching ephemera. I loved His Dark Materials, so I had high expectations for this new series. Maybe I was distracted, but I found the plot not as compelling, but not a bad read.

I enjoyed this book a lot but can't recommend it. Well, I can recommend it alone but don't recommend reading any further in the trilogy.

I remember completely loving this book in high school and reading it many times. It was my favorite book for awhile, I can't wait to go back now, years later, and re read it.

She shows maturity well beyond her years. However, the more that I followed Sally around the st...

I had already watched the (excellent) adaptation so the suspense was not as high as it should have been.I don't have much to say about it - it's a good solid mystery and should be a classic that is perennially on library shelves.

For whatever reason, I don’t have a good relationship with Phillip Pullman. I somehow made my way through The Golden Compass. Attempted to read the second book like 3 different times and failed every time. Saw this at the library book sale and thought I’d give him another shot.I chose to read this b...
