Steeped in Science, Submersed in Story
Somehow, although it has the distinctly terrestrial setting of nothern Italy during WWII, this book fits right in with Russell's previous work. I enjoyed her previous 2 novels, and I enjoyed this one. It's well-written. But you need to be prepared for similar situations. Mostly good people stuck...

One really could never accuse Mary Doria Russell of not being diverse as a writer. I first read her science-fiction duology “The Sparrow/Children of God;” which explores issues of culture and religion through the story of a Jesuit first-contact space mission. Then I read “Doc,” an historical Western...

Set in northern Italy at the very end of the second world war, this story will remain with you for years. Without being judgmental, Ms. Russell delves into the good and the bad in all of us. One of my absolute favorite books, it is deeply moving, and beautifully written. I learned a lot of history i...

Because I read this a very long time ago, I really cannot write a thorough review, other than to say that the author has done an admirable job of drawing the characters who, while living through the time of the Holocaust, in spite of awful conditions of horror and deprivation, often managed to hang ...

Powerful and depressing.Only problem, and it is slight one, is that for a time it is hard to keep some characters clear in your head.

Now that I have finished the book I really don't have more to add, so I will just leave my review as before. Other readers have disliked the ending. I have no complaints. War is war. I have to stop my reading for a second to fill you in. This book is good. The book covers a difficult subject. How do...

This is a truly beautiful story about Italian peasants willing to risk their own lives and go hungry in order to shelter and feed Jewish refugees during WWII. It also gives some grim insight about the reality of guerrilla warfare among the Italian partisans during this time. Heartwarming but also r...

sobbed through her earlier books, and this is no exception. Set during WWII, with many jewish main characters, Russell nevertheless avoids the obvious tragedies (although there are oblique mentions to the events in other countries) in order to concentrate on hearts, minds, and shattering illusions. ...

Haunting tale of Jews & Catholics during the last years of WWII. Set mostly in Italy, with a cast of entirely believable characters, this book kept me up nights- at first reading, and then thinking. Excellent writing that made WWII alive for me in a way nothing I've read before has done.
