Funny and entertaining. Loses a couple stars for endless dated hyperbole about how acid rain is going to wipe everything out (actually serves as a good warning to take whatever today's environmental panic of the moment with a big grain of salt) and his several unneeded shots at religious people (He ...

Read this for Pop Sugar Challenge prompt "set in wilderness". I had never read a Bryson book before, so the beginning chapters took me longer to read as I was trying to get into the groove of his writing. I will admit that it took me more chapters to find that groove than my usual and I almost DNF...

Well worth reading. A little tiresome humor sprinkled in, but for the most part an informative and interesting piece of reporting. Hard not to somewhat like Bryson and company. But a steady diet would certainly be too much.

A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson is part travelogue, part comedy, and part monologue. The book is at times informative, at times unkind, and at times funny. It is a personal journey, a social commentary, and a call to action to protect the Appalachian Trail. Overall, my reaction is as diverse as t...

When I was choosing a book to read, I took one look at the ratings for this book on Goodreads and knew that I had to read this book right away. Seriously, every ...

I love books about hiking and the outdoors so this was a natural pick for me and it didn't disappoint. It was funny and meaningful at the same time. It didn't have that "I found myself" cliche that most books of this genre have. It was simply a fun story about a couple of guys who tried, and sometim...

19952014Mostly, after nearly twenty years, all I remembered was that it was about a man and his friend hiking the Appalachian Trail, and that it was a fun read. Of course, that is mostly what it's about, although Bryson manages to include a great deal more, from the odd business of shopping for gear...

I thought this book was hysterical! Plus it was neat to read about them going through the Blue Ridge Parkway which is right around where I live! There were some scientific rants here and there that got a little dry at points but Bryson seems to realize hes gone on long enough and inserts quips like ...

Bill Bryson is awesome, but his friend Stephen Katz is more awesome.Published in 1998, Walk in The Woods, saw Bryson and his friend Stephen Katz team up once again(they travelled together in Europe, which is described in Neither Here Nor There) to hike the Appalachian Trail. The beginning of the boo...
