In Germany we have a long-running tv show named "Das Traumschiff". A bunch of people are going on a cruise ship not to have a wondeful vacation, but to solve all the problems they are having in their life. The show ends with the captains dinner at which the captain gives a ludicrous speech summarizi...

Frankly, I was somewhat confused by this book. There was a different chapter for each of the people working in Stonehouse, and a chapter for each of the people who visited it inn its first week open. No one's stories had entirely satisfying ends. The author tried to fix this by having Freda predict ...

This was one of those no plot books. There is no issue to over come, no resolutions, it's just about the opening week of a bed and breakfast and the events leading up to the guests and owners arrival at that point. It was interesting enough but the book just didn't capture my attention, and I was ...

A Week in Winter by Maeve Binchy is what I would call a cosy and easy read but an uninspiring read.I would sum it up as a collection of short stories about different people and how their problems were solved by a week in winter staying at and Irish Hotel. The stories are pretty predictable with no r...

I am sad that this is the last ever Maeve Binchy book. She did not disappoint with this effort and I found myself looking on TripAdvisor to see if I could find a vacation spot like Stone House in the West of Ireland!!Once again, Ms. Binchy's weaves what are essentially short stories, together with ...

Most of Binchy's later books remind me of the old Onion headline, "Taco Bell's Five Ingredients Combined In Totally New Way." The woman wronged, the illegitimate baby, the reformed juvenile delinquent, the successful entrepreneur... these are all common staples. There are some interesting stories h...

This book is decidedly cozy. I am not saying that as a bad thing, not remotely. What saves it is that it is not saccharine. Cozy, but not sickly sweet. Neither is it a challenging read, nor are there ideas that will occupy your brain for days, just a belief that taking time for yourself, in pleasant...

Maeve Bincnhy writes about a nation rapidly evolving from mid 20th-century social mores to the 21st-century. Binchy is a benevolent diety to her characters, understanding and forgiving and tolerant. She's also well aware that for all some people can do to improve themselves and their lives, luck, to...

I wasn't sure going in if I would like this book but the simple character studies won me over. The action revolves around Stone House, a residence turned hotel in western Ireland. Each character, from the staff to the guests, gets their own chapter that advances the story by a day or so. I liked ...

This was my first Maeve Binchy novel, and I was kinda disappointed. I loved the characters, but I didn't get enough. Each chapter was from a different character's POV and just as I was getting attached ... BAM! New chapter. I kept hoping that it would come back and tie them all together somehow....
