by Ursula K. Leguin The first of the classic Earthsea series by Ursula LeGuin. I probably should have read it long ago. It's a magical Fantasy about wizards and how they are trained in a land called Gont. Ged, the main character, distinguishes himself at a young age and comes to the attention of...

Another from NPR's Backseat Bookshelf. The rating is solely because I don't like high fantasy (I do like low fantasy). I'm pretty sure this A Wizard of Earthsea is good since most people who do like high fantasy like Le Guin and the Earthsea series. If I wanted long descriptions of fantasy worlds...

With all the hoo-ha regarding LeGuin's recent passing, I figured I should read one of her books to find out why she was so beloved. I think one of my kids might have read some LeGuin back during his adolescence. So, it seems this is to be the tale of a person born Duny, who is later named as Ged on ...

It is almost always fun to revisit books you have not read in a longish time and this one was no exception. The only issue I might have with this quick read is now I want to reread the rest of the series (if that can really be called an issue).4 Stars for entertainment as expected.

I was an adult before I became hooked on reading science fiction and fantasy, so there are a lot of classic books and authors I’ve still never read. Until a day and a half ago, Ursula Le Guin was one of those authors. The story is about a boy named Ged who, we’re told in the first paragraph, will b...

Hmm. I can see the appeal this book has to so many people and I did enjoy it somewhat, but there was something missing which kept me from rating it higher. Every time I started to really get into it, the plot seemed to reach a point where it would just fizzle out. The scene with the dragon was extre...
