Katherine is only five-years-old. Struck dumb with grief at her mother's death, it is down to her father, the heartbroken minister Tyler Caskey, to bring his daughter out of silence she has observed in the wake of the family's tragedy. But Tyler Caskey is barely surviving himself. His cold, church-assigned home is colder still since Lauren's death, and he struggles to find the right words for his sermons; struggles to be a leader to his congregation when he himself is lost. When Katherine's schoolteacher calls to discuss his daughter's anti-social behaviour, it sparks a chain of events that begins to tear down Tyler's defences. The small-town rumour-mill has much to make of Katherine's odd behaviour, and even more to say about Tyler's relationship with his housekeeper, Connie Hatch. If you like Marilynne Robinson, you'll like Elizabeth Strout. She's a bit earthier than Robinson. This is a great book with characters I could really relate to. A truthful book. Read it!

Sometimes you come across a line and it shines, like a pearl. But my, the first 2/3 of the book swam in a miasma of stunned grief. It was hard to keep one's head up and progress was painfully slow. I suppose that's fitting for a book that is about the slow healing of a pastor widowed by the death...

This book does a nice job of portraying what life was like back in the late 1950s. That's about the only positive. There's no plot and the dull, unlikeable protagonist without a personality gets walked over like a rug by everyone in town including his kids and mother. If there were pigeons around th...
