An associate professor of English and Southern Studies at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Adam Gussow is also a professional blues harmonica player and teacher. He is best known for his long partnership with Sterling "Mr. Satan" Magee, a Mississippi-born bluesman with whom Gussow began busking on the sidewalks of Harlem in 1986. As Satan and Adam, the duo has released six CDs--including, most recently, Throw Down! (2015)--and has worked a wide range of festivals and clubs, including the International BuskerFest in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In his days of youthful excess, Gussow busked the streets of Paris, Avignon, Cannes, Neuchatel, Ferrara, and Amsterdam with various guitar-men, including Abraham Yameogo, Bill Taft, and "Bad Boy" Billy Collins. These days, his new duo, The Blues Doctors, can be found clattering outdoors on festival days in Oxford and the Mississippi Delta. Gussow's other books include Mister Satan's Apprentice: A Blues Memoir (1998), Seems Like Murder Here: Southern Violence and the Blues Tradition (2002), and Journeyman's Road: Modern Blues Lives from Faulkner's Mississippi to Post-9/11 New York (2007). His current book projects are Busker's Holiday, a novel about a young scholar's plunge into Euopean busking scene, and Beyond the Crossroads, a study of the devil and the blues tradition.
