Okay, maybe not objectively 5 stars, but this book was just exactly what I needed right now. It's a little silly on the surface, but the goofy premise and light humor and bantering dialogue camouflage some serious themes, one of which surprise-smacked me in the face towards the end. Because it was t...
Agent to the Stars was absolutely fabulous! Scalzi has been on my to-read list for ages, but I just never got around to it. So, when the audio of this book popped up on my Audible recommendations, I snagged it without a second thought. It wasn't until I sat to listen to it that I realized that Wil W...
Old Man's War is a great read. The whole series is pretty good, in fact. For that matter, the whole series is excellent, and worth reading for anyone who likes a good science fiction adventure story. Agent to the Stars is written by the same guy who wrote Old Man's War (as you can see from the co...
I've come to expect certain things of a John Scalzi novel, and thanks to that, I'm tempted to pick up any of his books pretty much sight unseen. When I saw "Agent to the Stars" on a shelf in my local library on my last visit, I just grabbed it the way you might toss a bag of candy on the conveyer be...
4*s for being totally fun. Yes, the plot veers off in an odd direction and sudden deep philosophical questions are being thrown around but still. The entertainment doesn't let up for long and with excellent narration by Will Wheaton the book is still a tremendously fun listen.
This book was selected for the April Read for my book club based on a member's inquiry:I was thinking earlier today that it's kind of weird how I haven't really seen any major variances from the male/female paradigm in the sci-fi I've seen. Now, I'm not a sci-fi fan and am only recently starting to ...
3.5 stars. Another fun read from John Scalzi, and even more impressive since this was his "practice novel" which he wrote in 1997 just to see if he could write a novel. Indeed he could. It's classic Scalzi, light and funny with just a dash of crazy. Agent to the Stars is about Tom Stein, a young Hol...
The first half of this novel is zippy, zany alien-filled, making fun of Hollywood fun. Then this weird thing happens out of left field, and everything turns out all right in the end, but it just kind of made me feel . . . squicky. I liked it, though. Squicky-like? In terms of the writing, it's ver...
Loved the book. The humor was just my style-the way the Yherajk communicated was a hoot. What I also liked was that even though the MC was a smartass, he wasn’t made out to be a jaded guy or an agent who took advantage of other people to survive.I was expecting a romance between Tom and Michell but Mi...
Yes, I know this was John Scalzi's "starter novel," written as an exercise, just to see if he could do it. I know it wasn't traditionally published until years later, when his subsequent better books had already earned him name recognition and numerous Hugo nominations. I know that. I don't really c...
