Maybe important from a historical perspective, but I didn't think it was that great as fiction. Little feeling, little character development, unrealistic scenario for the start of a war, and almost Polyanna-ish optimism at some level, despite the physical devastation.
I've been eyeballing this book for a while, wondering whether or not to read it.I did, and it's just...well. I mean, I gave it five stars, so it's definitely not bad!Being an older book it has its flaws - the racism is strong in the time period, and sexism is alive and well - but it's really a good ...
the Soviet-American nuclear warfare! The Russians attacked first. They wanted to create communism and socialism in the USA with the state language as Russian. All the main US cities and Washington are wiped out. The same thing is for Moscow and Leningrad. America and the free western world answered ...
When I saw this book, I decided I just had to read it. I mean, who wouldn't want to read a story about surviving the nuclear apocalypse in a small town in Florida, particularly when you live in a small town in Florida? When I first got this book, I did not expect that much. However, as I started rea...
On The Day, as it will come to be known in the small Florida community of Fort Repose, the worst Cold War fears of adults and schoolchildren, civilians and military and politicians, alike will be realized. As tensions rise in the Middle East, one mistake--possibly human error, possibly equipment fa...

Not everything translates well to the 21st century, but it's believable for its time; it has a racial-equality subtext that would have got the author a great deal of hate mail in his day; and it encaps...
Alas, Babylon is a very good story with characters that are easily relate-able and sympathetic. Written in 1959, it's a horrifying account of the effects of nuclear war upon a small Florida town. Though fiction, Pat Frank was attempting to present an accurate, instructional portrayal of the aftermat...
Alas, Babylon was written in 1959 and is part of what I call the Trifecta of Nuclear Cold War novels. The first is Fail Safe which addresses how Nuclear War can be easily triggered though human error and simple stupidity. The second is [b:On the Beach|38180|On the Beach|Nevil Shute|http://ecx.images...
Allow me to start with the small negatives you'll think of when you read this book: The writing is a little dated - the 1950's-1960's era style so common to many books written in those two decades. Some readers might not care for the ways the author depicts female characters, I know I felt slightly ...
